Automatic external defibrillator ©2004 Heartsine Technologies, Inc. Basic samaritan ® PAD Product Training Toolkit

Automatic external defibrillator ©2004 Heartsine Technologies, Inc. Table of contents Sudden Cardiac Arrest Chain of survival Samaritan ® PAD Operation Samaritan ® PAD Overview –Product features –Troubleshooting –Maintenance

Automatic external defibrillator ©2004 Heartsine Technologies, Inc. Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) Sudden loss of heart function Victim collapses, is unconscious, not breathing and without circulation Death is imminent without rapid defibrillation

Automatic external defibrillator ©2004 Heartsine Technologies, Inc. SCA - What it is The heart has a unique electrical system that keeps the heart muscles pumping in rhythm, which delivers blood to the body. Heart Electrical System

Automatic external defibrillator ©2004 Heartsine Technologies, Inc. SCA & Ventricular Fibrillation When the heart’s electrical system is interrupted or malfunctions, the heart beats abnormally fast and chaotic (a condition known as ventricular fibrillation) Heart cannot pump blood to the body Victim collapses SCA Ventricular Fibrillation Quivering Heart

Automatic external defibrillator ©2004 Heartsine Technologies, Inc. Causes of Death in the U.S.

Automatic external defibrillator ©2004 Heartsine Technologies, Inc. Defibrillation An electrical shock to the heart Resets the hearts electrical system Allows rhythmic pumping action to resume Only effect treatment for ventricular fibrillation Defibrillation shocks the heart back into normal rhythm

Automatic external defibrillator ©2004 Heartsine Technologies, Inc. Chain of Survival

Automatic external defibrillator ©2004 Heartsine Technologies, Inc. “Chain of Survival” Rapid response sequence of events Activating the chain of survival immediately will increase the victims chance of survival Call 911 Early CPREarly Defibrillation Early Advanced Care

Automatic external defibrillator ©2004 Heartsine Technologies, Inc. 1. Call for help Once you have assessed the victim, and they are unresponsive send someone to: –Call for help –Bring you the PAD

Automatic external defibrillator ©2004 Heartsine Technologies, Inc. 2. Begin CPR Begin CPR immediately. CPR keeps oxygenated blood moving to the brain, heart and body.

Automatic external defibrillator ©2004 Heartsine Technologies, Inc. 3. Early Defibrillation As soon as the PAD arrives use it. The faster a defibrillation shock is delivered, the higher the chance of survival.

Automatic external defibrillator ©2004 Heartsine Technologies, Inc. 4. Early Advance Care The sooner advanced medical care arrives, a better outcome is possible. Make sure they can find you quickly.

Automatic external defibrillator ©2004 Heartsine Technologies, Inc. Certified Training HeartSine Technologies recommends that all persons using the samaritan ® PAD obtain CPR and AED training from a certified training organization.

Automatic external defibrillator ©2004 Heartsine Technologies, Inc. Using your samaritan ® PAD

Automatic external defibrillator ©2004 Heartsine Technologies, Inc. Access for SCA Unconscious Not Breathing Has no signs of normal circulation

Automatic external defibrillator ©2004 Heartsine Technologies, Inc. Follow 3 simple Steps Turn OnFollow PromptsPress Shock Button

Automatic external defibrillator ©2004 Heartsine Technologies, Inc. Turn On samaritan ® PAD Pressing the Green On button will “turn on” the samaritan ® PAD. Voice and visual instructions will immediately occur.

Automatic external defibrillator ©2004 Heartsine Technologies, Inc. Analyzing, Do Not Touch the Patient When pads are attached to the patient the samaritan ® PAD will begin to monitor the patient. “Assessing heart rhythm, do not touch the patient.”

Automatic external defibrillator ©2004 Heartsine Technologies, Inc. Shock Advised, Stand Clear If a shockable heart rhythm is found, the samaritan ® PAD will tell the rescuer “shock advised” and to “stand clear”

Automatic external defibrillator ©2004 Heartsine Technologies, Inc. Stand Clear! Press the shock button now! Once the samaritan ® PAD is ready to deliver the shock, it will instruct the rescuer to “Stand Clear” and to “Press the shock button” –IMPORTANT: Visually and verbally clear the patient before pressing the shock button.
