5 Officer Commission  As a Physical Therapist in the US Navy you will be commissioned as a Lieutenant Junior Grade or Lt. JG

6 Job Description  Comprehensive orthopedics for wounded or injured sailors, Marines, their families and people around the world  Variety of work settings such as hospitals, ships, etc  Freedom for controlling and implementing rehab programs

7 Equipment  Work with state of the art equipment  First to use new innovations and inventions  Government funded meaning no shortage of money, supplies, personnel or equipment.

9 Pay Grade Chart

10 Responsibilities  Prevent injuries  Rehab wartime, work-related or any other type of injury  Improve muscular-skeletal and other impairments  Perform all procedures as civilian PT but with more independence

11 Opportunities  Specialization in specific field such as massage therapy, orthopedics  Increase education and obtain certifications  Pursue advance degrees; additional pay for extra certs/degrees  Clinical/management positions available

14 Promotion Process  Authorized Officer Strength- amount of officers allowed in each branch.  Promotion Flow Points-years served before promotion allowed  Selection Opportunity Percentage-% of personnel accepted

15 Retirement Pay  20 years of service= 50% of base pay rate  2.5% added for each year beyond 20  30 years of service=75% of base pay

16 Specialty Jobs  Available special job options:  Navy SEALs  Health care administration officer  Navy Diver and Rescue  Navy Nurse

17 Commitment  Must be a US Citizen  Must possess a minimum of a 4 year degree  Be no older than 35 but older than 19  Financial obligations satisfied  Drug test  Serve a minimum of 3-5 years

18 Considerations  Significant time away from home Change of locations often  Long hours on the job and fluctuating work schedules

19 Switching Branches  Able to switch branches after contract is up  Qualifications will transfer and translate into different branch  Must go through boot camp again unless coming out of the Marines

20 After the Navy  Work within a hospital setting such as Cooper and Virtua  Open your own clinic  Use the GI Bill to obtain education in another field
