2. The main goal of this evening is to go over and clarify a variety of important areas which should help you to have a better understanding of Year 3.

5. Timetable Tuesday – 3A / 3L PE kits to be worn all day Wednesday – 3S / 3C PE kits to be worn all day Thursday – PE kits to be worn all day (Games) Library– students can change books during the week – before school and lunch break. Children are expected to bring their diaries in their bags. Diaries must be signed by parents weekly. Any change to the end of day routine must be recorded in your child’s diary (WALKERS NOTES)

Year 3 Approach An Inquiry–based approach to learning Development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside, is a framework guided by 6 themes of global significance. Children have individual needs and are at varying places in their learning and development Learning is not a competition or a race Develop greater independence alongside group and social skills and awareness ICT is used throughout all curriculum areas The core curriculum areas are: Maths – English – Inquiry - Chinese

7. Units of Inquiry Central ideas: Who We Are: The choices people make can affect their health and well-being How We Express Ourselves: Through the Arts people use different forms of expression to convey their uniqueness and perspective. To support your child in curriculum areas, please regularly refer to the Year 3 section of ‘The Buzz’. This term’s inquiry unit is linked to making healthy choices. As part of this we will be encouraging the students to eat healthy snacks and lunches throughout the year. Children need a personal water bottle to ensure they get adequate water throughout the school day. Please note Bradbury is a nut free school.

8. Mathematics The school policy is to teach Maths 5 times a week. Maths group change frequently according to the children’s needs. A variety of teaching strategies will be used. The Maths strands include: Data Handling, Pattern and Function, Shape and Space, Measurement and Number. Mental maths strategies will be re-enforced on a daily basis.

9. Reading Home readers: Independently selected based on their level Reading every night for twenty minutes Books are designed to be read at an 90% – 95% independency level, this is to build-up their reading mileage Guided reading lessons will contain more challenging texts My Reading Record

11. Writing Expectations for Year 3: Write on the line Start sentences with a capital letter Know when to use a full stop Read and write high-frequency words Form grammatically correct sentences Read their own writing back to others Work towards joining their handwriting

12. Supplies Your child should bring to school: A book bag / A3 zip pouch Lunch boxes (easy to open) Water bottle School hat Art apron

13. Homework Homework is designed to help parents be involved in their child’s learning. This may involve discussions linked to our Unit of Inquiry or practical life skills, such as telling the time and preparing simple food. It is set fortnightly and goes out on a Monday. There will be a completion date for each homework (usually the Wednesday before the next homework is handed out). Homework may include an inquiry project, reading, spelling, research, writing, Mathematics, games or ICT. Occasionally, incomplete work may be sent home to finish.

15. Promoting independence Provide a quiet working space for homework to be carried out. Help ensure homework is handed in on time. 16. Parent Involvement Class parent Each class has a class representative. If you wish to be a class helper, supporting small group work and activities– please see the sign up sheet. Educational visits (parents only). Occasional help i.e. art lessons, props for assembly, bringing in food for special events, backing new books, etc. Present to classes an area of expertise to come into class to present to share their knowledge. Sending things into school e.g. newspapers and magazines.

17. Correspondence Environment Friendly As needed, your class teacher/ year leader/ phase leader will correspond via email. Please keep your information updated on the gateway. Please be aware that immediate responses cannot be expected, particularly during school hours. Food NUT FREE ZONE No nuts at school due to severe allergies Birthday cakes If you are planning to send in cakes for your child’s birthday, please notify the class teacher Individual portions are preferred for organisation purposes Snack and Lunch Please do not send fizzy or sugary drinks Students should be able to open their own container independently All snacks and lunches should contain food which encourages a healthy lifestyle.

19. Reminders Label everything – clothes, snack boxes and containers, water bottles, pencils. Regularly check stationery supplies. Information on allergies / medical conditions needs to be given to the class teacher and school nurse. All medication needs to be administered by the school nurse and kept in her office during the school day. A note from you must accompany the medicine. Children must keep a uniformed hat in school everyday (named). Buses – notify the PTA if any changes and report in the diary to the class teacher. Please note students cannot change buses.

20. The Gateway Completed sections of reports can be accessed throughout the year (e.g. UOI Comments) Maths and Language reports will be available at the end of term 1 and term 2. Reports can be downloaded as a PDF document and printed off by parents at the end of the year. The school will not be sending home a hard copy of the reports. Parent/Teacher Consultations (Oct / Nov) - booking appointments will be online through Gateway. Usernames and login Passwords will be sent to new families (including Y1).
