6. THE PLAGUE ATTACKS There were no effective treatments for the plague  Rich woman swung their jeweled pomanders in front of them when they walk, and gentlemen filled the air around them with tobacco smoke. They hoped these things would protect them from the plague.

Whereas love is blind can mean that because you have love towards your partner, you do not see their deficiencies, their faults, their abusive traits, etc. “ Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind therefore is winged cupid painted blind ” - William Shakespeare It means that when you love someone that it doesn't matter what they look like but what is on the inside. And since Cupid is painted blind, he doesn't love with his eyes but with his mind (he loves what's on the inside.)
