Navigation

Kevin is in New York City and his family is in Florida. How can Kevin get to his family? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_An3W-oO2k Plan a course for Kevin to get back to his family. You may use any means of transportation you want (boat, plane, car, train, etc). Remember you have to get to the airport for a plane and the train station for a train. Be specific about the course you make. NAVIGATION What is Navigation? To follow a planned course on, across, or through. Why is navigation important to scientists who study ecosystems?

FOCUS QUESTIONS 1.How can 2-dimensional maps be used to represent 3-dimensional features and find locations on the surface of the earth? 2.How can we use technology to map different locations on the grounds of Fairview?

NAVIGATION SONG Well now a globe is like a sphere you know. The whole Earth is what it shows. While a map is flat as it can be, and shows locations on the Earth you see. A GPS uses satellites, so you can know which way is right. You know its mapping out directions Special features in the legend. It’s mapping out directions And the scale makes the connection to the real world yeah.

A LOOK AT MAPS How is a map different from a globe? Which one is better? What are the most basic features of navigation you can find on a globe or a map ?

COMPASS ROSE Use your compass to find the following: Where is the North door of the dinning hall? What direction is Clear Spring from here? What direction would you walk to go to the round house?

Use your compass to properly orient your Fairview map. Which direction would you walk to the following? Willow Pond Fire Tower Cedar Lodge Dry Pond

Latitude and Longitude 1.On your white globe start at the equator and count by tens to number each latitude line in the northern hemisphere. 2.Start at the Prime Meridian and count by tens to number each longitude line in the eastern hemisphere.

What is GPS? GPS: abbreviation of "Global Positioning System," a satellite navigation system that is used to determine a precise location on Earth.

Use your map, compass, and GPS to navigate to 12 “waypoints” at Fairview. – Be sure to punch your navigation card at each pole to prove you visited the proper site – Use only the solid green poles. Not the “yellow topped” poles. – Do your best. BE BACK ON TIME. This is not a race. SAFETY Do not run. Stay together with your group. Do not throw anything.

TO USE YOUR GPS TO NAVIGATE Press and hold the power button (bottom right) for three seconds to turn on the GPS. Push the “Page” button (top right) until you reach “Main Menu.” Push the toggle switch to the side until “Find” is highlighted. Push down on the toggle switch. While “Waypoints” is highlighted, push down on the toggle switch. Use the toggle switch to scroll to the “Nav” location you want (like Nav2, Nav3, etc.). Push the toggle switch. Scroll down to “Go To” and push the toggle switch. Walk in the direction of the arrow until you reach your destination.

TO USE YOUR GPS TO MARK WAYPOINTS Push the page button (top right) until you come to the “Main Menu”. Push the toggle switch sideways until “Mark” is highlighted. Push the toggle switch down. Name the waypoint by highlighting the top name line and typing in the name you wish to give this point. Scroll down to “OK” at the bottom of the display. Push in on the toggle switch. This will mark the waypoint.

Plotting Points in Google Earth Double click on the “Google Earth” icon. Type “Clear Spring, MD” into the search box and click on “Search”. Drag the hand on the screen and zoom in to Fairview Outdoor School. To plot points click on the yellow push pin icon on the top left of the page. Name the waypoint. If you used the GPS to navigate to that waypoint, then enter the latitude and longitude coordinates and click on “OK”. If you used the map and compass to navigate to that point, then click and drag the push pin to the proper place on the map.

FOCUS QUESTIONS 1.How can 2-dimensional maps be used to represent 3-dimensional features and find locations on the surface of the earth? 2.How can we use technology to map different locations on the grounds of Fairview?
