3 What The Houses Looked Like  There was a central room with several rooms surrounding it. The central room was taller than the other rooms so that small air holes could be placed in the high walls. The family spent most of the time in the central room and slept in the there during the night. The central rooms were used as kitchens, storage rooms, or an extra bedroom. The rich had more rooms also had a central room, but had more small rooms and also had luxuries like pools and gardens Drawing of an Egyptian house

4 What the houses were made from  Because of the trees that grew in Egypt weren’t very good for building, the Ancient Egyptians had to use other materials. Early houses were made of papyrus reeds. Soon the Egyptians found that they could make bricks out of the mud from the flood season and be used for building. The bricks were made by mixing mud and straw and leaving it to dry in the sun. The bricks were then whitewashed to keep the house cool. Some Egyptians were rich enough to make their houses out of stone. Remains of Egyptian mud house

5 The tools used to make houses  The earliest tools were made of wood, but even later on the Egyptians used wooden tools because wood can be easily be shaped for its purpose. Some of the wooden tools used were:  Later Egyptians used stone tools, which were harder to shape, but were much tougher than wooden tools  Copper was much better than stone or wood but was more expensive and was softer than both of the earlier tools but Egyptians found its advantages. Some of the advantages was that it could be shaped into a much finer point than stone so it could be used for tools like axes and saws. Ancient Egyptian tools
