The direct object answers: › Who? › What? It is the recipient of the action. For sentences with one conjugated verb: › The DOP comes before the conjugated verb › The DOP comes between the negtive (“no”) and the conjugated verb
3
In sentences with more than one verb: › Yo quiero comprar el sombrero. › “I want to buy the hat.” › You can put the DOP either before the conjugated verb or connected to the end of the not conjugated verb. › Ejemplo: Yo quiero comprarlo. Yo lo quiero comprar. *After the verb is more common*
4
Tell us where the DO is going. They answer the questions: › To whom? › For whom? Examples: › I give the shirt to you. › He buys me a ring.
5
NOTE: Sentences with an IO normally also have a DO › For examples it doesn’t make sense to say “He buys me…” What does he buy you? Sometimes the DO is implied. › She writes me. › It is implied that a letter is the DO, the thing that is written.
6
Work the same way as DOP. The chart is as follows: Me (me) Nos (us) Te (you informal) Os (y’all) Le (him/her/you formal) Les (them/you all formal)
7
We’ll do the first one together: › He buys the hat for me. Él me compra el sombrero. Try it for yourself: › They want the skirt for you. Ellos te quieren la falda. › I buy the shoes for you all. Les compro los zapatos. › We buy the pants for her. Le compramos los pantalones
8
Just like the DOP, when the statement is negative you need to put the IOP between the negative word (for example, “No”) and the conjugated verb. Example: › I don’t buy clothing for you all. No les compro la ropa.
9
Which IOP aren’t as clear about who they are talking about outside of the context of the sentence? 3 rd person: › Le can be him, her, it, or you formal › Les can be they or you all formal What do we do then?
10
What did you do when you ran across this problem with the verbs Gustar and Encantar? Add in a “a ella” or “a Maria” Ejemplo: › I buy Alicia the dress. › Le compro el vestido a Alicia. *****If there is an IO in the sentence you MUST have an IOP EVEN if the IO is directly stated*****

Direct translation doesn’t work well. You need to be able to recognize groups of words as their meaning as a whole. Previous knowledge greatly helps with this – especially verb conjugations!
