DENTAL IMPLANTS Are surgical components (usually metallic)which are inserted into the bone to support a dental prosthesis (crown or bridge)
3
BASIC TYPES OF IMPLANTS 1\SUBPERIOSTEAL IMPLANT: implant placed under the periosteum on top of the bone
4
2\TRANSOSTEAL IMPLANT Implant that penetrates entirely through the bone
5
3\ENDOSSEUS IMPLANT : Implant placed into the bone
6
METALS USED FOR IMPLANTS Titanium and titanium alloys
7
PARTS OF DENTAL IMPLANT 1\IMPLANT FIXTURE Metal cylinder placed into bone to support the crown
8
2\IMPLANT ABUTMENT: The metal component that connect the crown to the fixture
9
3\IMPLANT CROWN The prosthetic restorative part
10
4\HEALING ABUTMENT: Temporary abutment placed on the implant fixture to allow soft tissue healing
11
OSSEOINTEGRATION OF AN IMPLANT THE PROCESS OF BONE GROWING INTO INTIMATE CONTACT WITH AN IMPLANT.
12
HOME CARE FOR IMPLANT The implant surface inside the oral cavity can accumulate plaque and calculus leading to inflammation of the soft tissues surrounding it If not treated this inflammation and bacterial invasion can progress to the bone surrounding the implant and can attribute to its loss. So,it is very important for the patient with implant to maintain good oral hygiene
13
HOME CARE AIDS: 1\DISCLOSING AGENTS: help the patient to visualize the location of plaque.
14
2\BRUSHES: 1-gentle sulcular brushing 2-interproximal brushing 3-regular soft bristled tooth brush 4-power brushes can be used
15
3\DENTAL FLOSSES:
16
4\WOODEN PLAQUE REMOVALS Wooden sticks and tooth picks can be used carefully
17
5\ANTIBACTERIAL AGENTS: Chlorhexidine mouth wash for 1-2 weeks Phenolic mouth rinses
18
Hygiene visits 1\the patient should return to the dental office regularly at 3-4 month intervals for routine implant assessment At the visits 1\ask the patient if there is implant mobility,,bleeding of peri implant tissue, pain with chewing 2\inspect the peri implant soft tissue(if there is swelling, redness, bleeding, recession
19
3\review the oral hygiene technique with the patient 4\routine probing is not recommended (if it must be done, use plastic probes with light touch) 5\when performing scaling and root planning to a patient with implant, use plastic or graphite instruments
