What’s a typical day › Work hours are Wednesday – Sunday, 8 hours for most days (time changes depending on day) › Spends 3-4 ‘on desk’ most days (checking out books, giving service, interacting with patrons) › Organizes and plans events for children’s library (Pitkin Pals, Summer Reading) Creates brochures, signs, displays, etc Favorite Part of the Job? › Working with the kids, seeing them improve and succeed because of the library › Being in a quiet place

What are the benefits? › No library fees (yay!) › A wide selection of entertainment/resources and material to read/interact with › Interacting with the children › Being a positive part of the community Downsides? › Repetitive tasks – shelving books especially

College education and requirements for job › Masters in “Library Sciences” › Degree in literature is more advantageous If you could change your job, how would you? › More kids programs and advertising for attendance! › Would like to make the library larger/wider selection Talents involved with the job? › Patience with patrons (especially children) › Knowledge of organization system › Technical know-how, look-up › Some knowledge in organization, planning, aesthetics › Reading!

Working environment? › Nice, friendly co-workers › Quiet, generally, friendly people (most of the time) › Some patience required for the kids › Organization is good!

Being a librarian would be a good job for me › Understanding of the library system and previous work experience, can find books quickly › Calm, quiet and intelligent environment › Know how to make visually appealing advertisement/displays › Doesn’t get bored with repetitive tasks Probably would not be a children’s librarian though › Not much patience with children
