Vocabulary: Totem: A Symbol, such as an animal, or plant that is a symbol for a family, tribe, etc., especially among Native Americans Totem Pole: A tall usually wooden pole that is carved and painted with symbols, figures or masks which represent different Native American tribes Folktale: a traditional story; characteristically anonymous, timeless, and placeless tale circulated among a people

Native American Totems According to Native American tradition, totems represent the individual. Throughout the life of a person, nine different animals will serve as a guides for that individual.

Native American Totems However, one animal spirit guardian will serve as the main guide for each individual. This animal guardian will accompany them through all stages of their life. People can only learn from their guide if they learn to communicate with them.

After death, the spirit of the person is absorbed into the animal.

Totems are large, wooden carvings of various animals. The totems represents a loved one or family member who has passed away.

Indians.org Research totems to create a totem that represents you. Look through the lists of animals. Which animal do you relate to most? Incorporate aspects of yourself.
