The Digital Camera Basic Photographic Principles: Shutter Speed & Aperture Setting

Some Basic Photographic Principles  Correct exposure is the result of the right balance between the shutter speed and the aperture

Shutter Speed  Is the speed at which the shutter opens and closes when it lets in the light speed to capture the image  The speed you need depends on the light available and the subject

A landscape image would not require a very fast shutter speed. Slower speed

A higher speed is needed for a fast action shot like a football game. High Speed

Aperture  The aperture is the size of the hole through which the lights passes  This size will dictate the depth of field in a photograph

Depth of field:  Is the area that is still “sharp” in front of and behind the focused point.  Depth of field is the amount of distance between the nearest and farthest objects that appear in acceptably sharp focus in a photograph.

Depth of Field  It influences the look of the picture: crisp & sharp? Highlight the subject?  Functions: Portrait, Landscape, and Action help control this

Aperture Ring: “f” stops  The aperture is described in “f”stops  the number is opposite in proportion to its size.

Small Aperture = Overall Focus  A small or narrow aperture will give an image sharp focus from foreground to background  represented as a high number.

f/ 8.0f/5.6f/2.8

Large Aperture Isolates the Subject  A large or wide aperture isolates the subject, with the background and foreground out-of-focus  represented by a low number.

ACTIVITY finding Examples…. Use the link below and add 8 more slides to demonstrate your understanding of f stop and depth of field while reviewing the categories of photography for NEXT WEEKS TEST! Title slides to show your chosen category and f stop 1. Photojournalism find 1 low f stop and 1 high 2. Social Documentary find 1 low f stop and 1 high 3. Documentary find 1 low f stop and 1 high 4. Art Photography find 1 low f stop and 1 high http://boston.com/bigpicture
