I have a dream today…

Today we are going to investigate a famous speech made by Martin Luther King as a Civil Rights rally in Washington. What was his dream?

Martin Luther King ‘I have a dream’ speech I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal." I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state, sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character. And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!" Glue the speech in the middle of your page. Read through the speech and pick out the meaning of each section. He believes that America should live up to it’s claim that ‘all men are created equal’ What was Martin Luther King’s dream?

MLK made this speech at the top of the steps of the Washington Memorial after the famous march on Washington, could you write a similar speech?

And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal." I have a dream that one day …… Using the knowledge you have gained of the treatment of black people in America complete Martin Luther King’s dream. You should include another THREE paragraphs at least. ALL OF US will be able to describe the problems facing Black Americans. (4B-4A) EVEN BETTER IF you can explain why these issues existed and the impact they had on Black Americans. (5C- 5B) EXCELLENT IF you can judge which are the most important changes which need to be made for Black Americans to achieve equality. (5A-6A)

MLK was assassinated in 1968 on the balcony of his hotel room. He campaigned for better rights for black people peacefully to his end.

Did his dream come true? Listen to his dream again and make notes on any aspects you believe did come true. Which aspects of his dream did come true? Which did not?

ALL OF US will be able to describe the problems facing Black Americans. (4B-4A) EVEN BETTER IF you can explain why these issues existed and the impact they had on Black Americans.
