1. Why can’t you toilet train a baby? Sphincter muscles have not developed 2. At what age are children commonly ready to be toilet trained? Anytime after 18 months depending on the child

3. List signs of readiness that a child may show that indicates he is ready for toilet training: -can control muscles -recognize the feelings -learned how to dress

4. Before you begin to train a child, the following can be done for preparation: -Discuss it -Potty chair or seat, let them choose - Videos - Books 5. The following are guidelines that may be used in training: Buying underpants can be an encouragement. Let them pick out ones they like. They usually view it as a sign of maturity.

6. What about accidents? Probably will happen less as a child grows older. You should never pressure or punish. 7.Hygiene Washing: how to and when to, sing ABC’s Flushing: can be interesting or frightening Wiping: explain how, you may have to help

8. Nighttime control: Comes later than daytime. Is it ok for the child to wear diaper at night and during naps? Signs of readiness: less soiled diapers waking up to go

9. Resistance (possible causes.) Not ready Fear of unknown or growing up Medical problem

10. Regression: Is it common? Yes May be caused by stress What should be done? Be encouraging and continue training

12. Do’s Praise for correct toileting Be available, encouraging Respect child’s privacy

13. Don’t Force child to start training Expect child to be perfect Train during times of change. Ex. Moving Scold or be upset by accidents or compare them with other children
