Do symbolic logos have line, shape, positive/neg space? Expression? Emphasis? If we drew inferences from these visuals, what kind of companies might they represent and why?

4 Pictographs pictogram (also spelled pictogramme) or pictograph is a symbol representing a concept, object, activity, place or event by illustration What’s the difference between Symbol and Pictograph? Discuss Line, Shape, Space, Expression, Emphasis Who sees, where do they see it?

5 Lettermarks Initials or abbreviations Text only
The text is more than just a font typed in Illustrator… What has been done to make this lettermark?

6 Combination Marks Symbol or pictograph + lettermark combined
If registered =Trademark Discuss Line, Shape, Positive/Negative Space Are these expressive? Where is the emphasis? See any Closure?

7 Find examples Take ten minutes to find an example of each type of logo on the internet. Then copy/paste into an Illustrator file, label each, and save as a your name logo types.jpg file. Upload this file to the wiki page. Make a new page link on your page named your name logo types and make that jpeg appear in that window. They can search for companies they already know, like McDonald’s or Nike. Or find a logo they just like. Image searching under “logo design” or “company name”.

8 Logo Research See the following site:
1) Is this a legitimate site? How do you know? Write down on the page you will turn in with your sketches. 2) This site says there are four characteristics for logos to be good designs. List and describe on the page that will contain your sketches. I talk about these quick and cheap Logo design firms you can find on the internet. What do you suppose independent designers or design firms think about these? Are they good logos?

9 What makes a Good Mark? The four characteristics: Shape, Presence, Weight, Contrast Expression, connection to company goals and product Careful with blends if any, 4 or fewer COLORS (black=a color) Reduces well to 1” x 1” (Zoom out) Computer Skill, paths/technique.

10 Design Process On the back of your examples of types of logos that you printed out: Follow this design process: BRAINSTORM a company name and company identity. Explain in a PARAGRAPH what your company does, what kind of look you want for the logo, what kinds of colors would work best and why?. Make 10 SKETCHES for your logos working 2-3 ideas progressively. CREATE 2 logos for the same company. Rough one in Illustrator, one in Photoshop. The handout spells these steps out….
