Warm up Why are hydrogen bonds the weakest bond, ionic bonds stronger, and covalent bonds the strongest? What does it mean to be the strongest bond?

Matter Everything in our universe is made of stuff, tiny atoms and molecules Particles attract one another, the greater the attraction the closer the particles get

Atoms

Elements, molecules and compunds Element-A chemical element is a pure chemical substance consisting of a single type of atom distinguished by its atomic number, which is the number of protons in its atomic nucleus Molecule- two or more atoms chemically combined Compounds- Two or more DIFFERENT elements chemically combined Write down one element, two molecules(same element, different element) and one compound

Bonds A covalent bond is a chemical bond that involves the sharing of electron pairs between atoms Ionic bonding is a type of chemical bond that involves the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions A hydrogen bond is the attractive force between the hydrogen attached to an electronegative atom of one molecule Usually the electronegative atom is oxygen, nitrogen, or fluorine, which has a partial negative charge.

Periodic Table

Valence Electrons and Shells Valence electron in the outermost electron shell They can participate in the formation of a chemical bond; The presence of valence electrons can determine the element's chemical properties and whether it may bond with other elements Electron shell, may be thought of as an orbit followed by electrons around an atom's nucleus KCl is a common compound, why do Potassium and Chlorine go so well together?

Lewis Structure/ Electron Dot Diagram Diagrams that show the bonding between atoms of a molecule and the lone pairs of electrons that may exist in the molecule Draw out the EDD for Li, F, Phosphorus
