2  China’s biggest problem was about Europe › Because they were forced to trade, the Europeans gave Opium to China. › This resulted in people to be addicted. › The Chinese people had to pay a lot for the European item, causing the country’s economy to drop.

3  The Opium War lasted for about 21 years.  This type of war was divided into two time period, the First Opium War occurred from 1839~1842, and the Second Opium War occurred from 1856~1860.  This was particularly about how the trade of opium was a crucial effect in China’s economy

4  The First Opium War was fought between the British East India Company and Chine (Qing Dynasty).  Before this opium conflict occurred, the Chinese and Europe was trading peacefully › When the Europeans found Opium, this is when Europeans started to export opium to China.  When China started to ban opium from coming into China, many minor killing started to occur around China. › This created a big conflict politically between the Chinese and the British.

5  The war resulted where the Chinese has lost and the British won › This affect later usage of drug imports to China. › Also, the loss of this Opium War led to a rebellion in China, called the “Taiping Rebellion.”

6  The Second Opium War was fought between United Kingdom and France (Allied) and China. › Occurrence of this war was because that the Chinese government denied all the British and France’s demands. › This war is thought to be the continuation of the First Opium War.

7  China did not want to trade with the west at all › Isolationist Country  China had to trade with the Europeans due to the power of the world  Offered the expensive tea for silver  When opium started to arrive in China, many people became addicted to it. › The emperor panicked about this situation, thus ordering Queen Victoria to ban the import of opium to China  Queen Victoria of Great Britain refused to do so, thus leading to the Opium Wars.

8  Europe just wanted goods from China › Examples: Tea, Silk, Cotton, etc.  When Europe tried to give items to China, China rejected most of them, making Europe to give silver to China  During the trade, Europe smuggled some Opium in order to save the economy in Europe. › Many people in China became addicted to Opium  The Europeans went through a Opium War between China, but eventually won.  Europe was able to get a hold of 5 trading ports

9  China was forced to sign a peace treaty with Great Britain › This meant that China needs to give Hong Kong to Great Britain  Losing Hong Kong meant that China lost some resources and land  China was forced to open five key ports for trading with Europe  More trading started to happen in China › This included more Opium in China, thus making more people to be addicted to it.
