What our PhD students say… “What fascinates me the most about the ESD PhD programme at SUTD is the innovative collaborative approach towards teaching and research. The educational system is geared towards stimulating creativity and curiosity in its students, and I am very much looking forward to experiencing the spirit that arises in this environment.” - Harald Bernhard, Germany - Giacomo Dalla Chiara, Italy “The aspect that attracted me the most is the combination of different research interests of the ESD pillar faculty: optimisation, operations research, machine learning, extreme value theory, network analysis and game theory. Also, compared to other PhD programmes in Europe, the ESD PhD does not require supervision by only one professor; thus I can potentially work on two or three different research projects under different supervisors.”
19
What our PhD students say… “The pillar name itself, Engineering Systems and Design, attracted me. Sometimes a lot of time is spent creating new things and not a lot of it spent designing them in a better way. I think I will enjoy the lively and multicultural environment at SUTD, as well as the possibility to work with young talented professors who prefer to look at PhD students as colleagues instead of only students.” - Giorgio Sartor, Italy “I hope to make the world a better place to live in and I want to influence students to do the same. I hope to work on any possible real life environmental, sociological and health related studies. In so far, I have had the opportunity to work with a company that produces biodiesel from waste oil collected from restaurants in Istanbul, Turkey. I hope I can do many of more projects of similar nature.” - Ozge Tuncel, Turkey “Though SUTD is a newly established university, the unique pedagogy promises it to be a success in the near future. For me, dedicated to be a researcher, SUTD provides me a quite different atmosphere, where you can brainstorm with faculties from various areas.” - Yang Yufei, China

MIT-SUTD Dual Masters’ Programme
21
A unique opportunity to earn two degrees … 2-year programme; a year is spent in each university Joint collaboration between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Singapore University of Technology and Design Enables outstanding individuals to maximize their potential in the fields of technology and design by obtaining two degrees … one from MIT and one from SUTD
22
The programme is for … Bright, talented, enthusiastic and passionate individuals Students who are committed to a high level of achievement, not only for his/her own personal enrichment, but also in his/her professional and academic development Candidates from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds, with a broad range of personal and professional experiences

“I am very blessed to be part of this programme. The experience has taught me a lot. I learnt many things about the industry, widened my network and benefited from useful business discussions that challenged us to approach problems with innovation from a different perspective. It has been an enriching and meaningful two years for me.” - Teo Yi Linn, Inventory Management Executive, PSA What our graduates say … “I enrolled in the manufacturing programme at MIT with the goal of understanding the back end of the innovation ― designing and developing processes that would scale effectively in production. At SUTD, I undertook an even broader perspective, studying whole system design for optimal control and robustness. These experiences have opened my eyes to breadth and depth of the innovative cycle, and guided me towards a future in project development and management.” - Nikhil Jain, Product Design Engineer, Amazon Lab126 “The problem solving skills and domain knowledge in manufacturing that I acquired during the MIT-SUTD Dual Masters’ programme has adequately prepared me for my job, by allowing me to analyse problems using a systematic approach and helping clients to prioritise actions.” - Chen Zhuling, Management Consultant, Roland Berger Strategy Consultants
