Do Now What prior knowledge or experience do you have with the game of volleyball? Have you ever played? If not, what inferences can you make about the game?
2
Volleyball 101
3
Objective I will analyze the various facets of the game which includes scoring, serving, gameplay, violations, and volleyball language. I will demonstrate the biomechanics involved in the “bump pass” by passing the ball at least 10 consecutive times while engaged with my entire group.
4
Scoring Each set goes up to 15 points. Each point is worth 1. Winning team has to win by 2 points.
5
Serving Server must serve from behind the restraining line ( end line ) until after contact. Ball may be served underhand or overhand. Served ball may graze the net and drop to the other side for point. Serve must be returned by a bump only. No attacking a serve.
6
Playing the Game Maximum of three hits per side Player may not hit the ball twice in succession ( A block is not considered a hit ). Ball may be played off the net during a volley and on serve. A ball touching a boundary line is good. Any hit above the waist is legal.
7
Playing the Game cont…. If two or more players contact the ball simultaneously, it is considered one play and the players involved may not participate in the next play. A player must not block or attack a serve.
8
Rotation Team will rotate each time after a sideout. Players shall rotate in a clockwise manner. There shall be 4-6 players on each side.
9
Do Now How does scoring work in volleyball? Describe how the rotation process works? How are you supposed to serve in volleyball?
10
Violations Stepping on or over the line on a serve. Failure to serve the ball over the net successfully. Hitting the ball illegally ( Carrying, Palming, Throwing, etc. ). A player touches the net with any part of the body
11
Volleyball Lingo "Ace"When the ball is served to the other team, and no one touches it. "Sideout"When the team that served the ball makes a mistake, causing the ball to go to the other team. "Roof"When a player jumps above the height of the net, and blocks the ball.
12
Volleyball Lingo "Stuff"When a player jumps about the height of the net, blocks the ball, and the ball goes back at the person who attacked(spiked) the ball. "Dig"When a player makes a save from a very difficult spike. "Kill"When a team spikes the ball and it either ends in a point or a sideout.
13
Exit Slip: Volleyball 1.0 What are 3 components of scoring? When playing the game, what is the maximum times a ball can be hit on one side? What are 2 aspects of rotating? A violation can be caused by? Provide 3 examples. What does the term “ace” mean?
14
Group Exit Slip: Volleyball 101 Instructions: In a group of 5, you will document the core concepts of volleyball. You will be given a piece of butcher paper to scribe the key components of your topic (scoring, serving, gameplay etc…) 12 mins to complete the poster. Every team member must be engaged in the activity. Posters will be presented at the end of class.
