Thomas Sully The Torn Hat-1820 Portrait : Any work of art showing a person, several people on an animal. Portraits usually emphasize just the face. Self-portrait : A portrait the artist makes of himself. Texture : The way an object looks as though it feels, such as rough or smooth.

Repetition : a design that has parts that are used over and over again in a pleasing way. Complimentary Colors : colors that are opposite on the color wheel and contrast with each other. For example, orange is the compliment to blue, yellow of purple and red of green.

The primary colors are red, blue and yellow: every color except white can be created from various blending of these three colors. Folk Art - where the subjects are taken from everyday life and surroundings.
