8. Storm Water - - how it happens The city storm drains collect water and debris and carry it untreated, directly to the “River”, the Chesapeake Bay and Currituck Sound. W hen rainwater falls on impervious surfaces, it picks up and carries with it a wide variety of harmful pollutants. Impervious surfaces are areas covered with buildings or homes, streets and parking lots as opposed to ground surfaces (soil, grass, mulch, etc.) The amount of impervious area has a direct relationship to the quantity of pollutants contained in stormwater runoff.

9. SW BMPS Rock bottomed trenches - allow storm water to soak into the soil beneath it. Detention ponds – temporarily hold water to reduce flooding and erosion Retention Ponds - have a permanent pool of water, which allows more time for sediment and pollution settling. Grassed swales- slow the flow and channel runoff. Vegetative buffers and strips remove pollutants

10. Never dump pollutants into storm drains. Avoid over fertilization of lawns. Fall application, aeration and diluted use of weed killer and pesticide are the best choices. Never apply any chemicals just before it rains. Never cut your grass more that 1/3 its length at a time. Litter, debris, leaves, oils, detergents should not be put into the storm drain. Mulch your grass and bag your leaves. Wash cars and boats on grassy surfaces, if possible.

Hazardous Waste Hazardous Waste (For CESQG) ID your HW (call RECO or the local county HW collection center) Comply with threshold regulatory limits –Less than 1kg AHW or 100kg HW generated per month; and –Less than 1000kg HW stored on-site at any given time Ensure proper treatment/disposal of HW –Ensure safe delivery of permitted disposal facilities Call the RECO with questions on packaging, labeling, & transportation requirement prior to shipping Keep records Use non-hazardous products Handout for HWD Disposal

17. Used Oil BMP Recycle it! Establish a centralized accumulation area DO NOT MIX WITH SOLVENT Label as “Used Oil” Empty Containers - handout

18. Universal Waste (Batteries, thermostats, & light bulbs) Recycle it! Label/Date it. Must be disposed of within 1 year. For light bulbs, it’s best to buy low mercury bulbs with “Green” EPA label to avoid this requirement altogether.

19. RECO RULES 1.Do not infinitely store products and chemicals that you do not want. 2. Label and store containers properly until disposal. 3.Determine if your waste is Hazardous (RCRA). 4.Contact the RECO for certification of your company or to get a company who is licensed for disposal. Don’t pay for waste disposal with a credit card. 5.Document how you came about the EPA generator ID number.

20. 6. Use Non hazardous products 7. Do your inspections – containers, storage areas, tanks. Document your inspections. 8. Training ! Get some every year. 9. If you spill it, clean it up. Document it. When you need help – ask for it. 10.Keep these records, all shipping papers, land bans forms at the facility. Permission required from RECO and GC to release.
