Developing a Study Time & Place Quiet Area – Good lighting – All supplies available – Free of distractions – Desk or table is best Regular Time Each Day – Interruptions don’t count towards goal! Set a Good Example

Parents: Setting a Good Example Pay the bills Clean & Organize! Read the paper/book Do your own homework Do some chores Fill in your own agenda or calendar When you’re both done, talk about what you’ve accomplished.

Managing Time Do what has the earliest deadline first. – If times runs short, the priorities will be finished. Do the harder subjects first. – Save the “easy” subjects for when you may get more tired. Do what’s required first. – Finish the optional assignments later.

The Agenda a.k.a. The Planner A tool that helps make time visible. Keeps track of both immediate deadlines and long- term projects. Keeps track of school and personal life. Estimate how long things take. Calculate how much time you have to complete work. Block out study time in your schedule.

To Become Effective at Studying, Know Different Ways to Study Read and Repeat Flash Cards Acronyms- Examples: ROY G BIV, HOMES Songs, Poems, Raps Silly Phrases- The sillier the better! Drawings and diagrams Self-test Study-Buddy

LEARNING STYLES Different styles of learning require different styles of studying. 1.Visual Learners – Learn best by seeing 2.Auditory Learners – Learn best hearing 3.Kinesthetic Learners – Learn best by doing Take a Learning Style Quiz to find out what type of learner you are. (These can be found online and vary in length. ) Once you know your learning style, focus on studying in ways which cater to your style (by seeing, listening or physically doing something with the information).

More Ways to Study 1)Make up Rhymes or Songs. ( In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue). 2)Make up Acronyms. (ROY G BIV, HOMES, SCUBA) 3)Use Alliteration. (Bees bring bunches of big honey gobs). 4)Make Mental Connections or Mental Links. Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. Think “Edi-SUN”. The sun makes light like a bulb. 5)Use Visualizations. (The Dept. of Agriculture is part of the president’s Cabinet. Visualize a cabinet with corn in it). 6)Make Drawings or Pictures.
