IT CAREERS Prepared by: Careene McCallum-Rodney

Computer Technician  Computer technicians:  install,  repair,  maintain,  and analyze many different types of computer equipment.  This includes everything from laptops to systems that monitor changes in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Computer Engineers  Computer engineers (or computer hardware engineers):  research,  design,  develop,  test,  and oversee the manufacture and installation of computer hardware.  Computer hardware includes computer chips, circuit boards, computer systems, and related equipment such as keyboards, routers, and printers.

Software Engineer  Software engineering (SE) is concerned with developing and maintaining software systems that :  behave reliably and efficiently,  are affordable to develop and maintain,  and satisfy all the requirements that customers have defined for them. Continues

Software Engineer  A software engineer is a licensed professional engineer who is schooled and skilled in the application of engineering discipline to the creation of software.  A software engineer is often confused with a programmer, but the two are vastly different disciplines.  While a programmer creates the codes that make a program run, a software engineer creates the designs the programmer implements.

Software Tester  Once a project reaches a certain stage of development, your role is to ensure it works exactly as it should.  When testing a new piece of software, it'll be up to you to try as best you can to ‘break’ it!  This helps the design process and ensures a faultless program at every stage of development.  By working closely with software designers and program managers, you’ll be able to understand what the product is meant to do, its key features and its users.

Software Tester  Once you understand what the program is meant to be, you’ll then carry out tasks such as:  functional testing,  customer scenario testing,  stress testing,  performance testing,  scalability testing  and international testing.

Webmaster  The webmaster is the person in charge of maintaining a Web site.  The jobs of a webmaster include:  writing HTML for Web pages,  organizing the Web site's structure,  responding to e-mails about the Web site,  and keeping the site up-to-date.

Web Developer  A web developer is responsible for programming the functionality of a web site.  So while a requirements analyst is tasked with determining what a web site should do, the web developer figures out how it is going to do it and then writes the necessary programming code.  Much of this programming code is behind the scenes and not visible to the user.  However, a web developer may also be responsible for the code that the user sees..

Software Trainer  A software trainer is a type of training specialist who teaches individuals how to use computer applications or programs such as:  spreadsheets,  desktop publishing programs,  or computer network systems software.  The nature of the job requires knowledge of computer software programs and strong communication skills.

Multimedia Artist  A multimedia artist is an artist who creates work which spans multiple media, usually with a focus on the integration of electronic media.  Specifically multi-media artists and animators use computers and other electronic media to create animation, special effects and other visual images on video and film.  They typically work in advertising, computer systems design services and motion picture and video industries.

Computer Programmer  A person who writes programs for the operation of computers, esp. as an occupation.

Systems Analyst  A person who analyzes a complex process or operation in order to improve its efficiency, esp. by applying a computer system.  An individual in charge of designing, modifying, or analyzing various systems to ensure compatibility and user effectiveness.  System analysts do not focus on hard-coding, but more on evaluating the code and making suggestions.codemaking

IT Manager  IT management is the discipline whereby all of the technology resources of a firm are managed in accordance with its needs and priorities.  These resources may include tangible investments like:  computer hardware,  software,  data,  networks  and data centre facilities,  as well as the staffs who are hired to maintain them. Continues

IT Manager  Managing this responsibility within a company entails many of the basic management functions:  like budgeting,  staffing,  and organizing and controlling,  along with other aspects that are unique to technology, like: change management, software design, network planning, tech support

Systems Programmer  System programming (or systems programming) is the activity of programming system software.  The primary distinguishing characteristic of systems programming when compared to application programming is that:  application programming aims to produce software which provides services to the user (e.g. word processor),  whereas systems programming aims to produce software which provides services to the computer hardware (e.g. disk defragmenter). It requires a greater degree of hardware awareness.

Database Administrator  A database administrator (short form DBA) is a person responsible for the:  installation,  configuration  upgrade  administration  monitoring  and maintainance of databases in an organization.

Database Administrator  Their role includes:  the development and design of database strategies,  system monitoring and improving database performance and capacity,  and planning for future expansion requirements.  They may also plan, coordinate and implement security measures to safeguard the database

File Librarian  A person who works in the data library and keeps track of the tapes and disks that are stored and logged out for use.  Also known as a "media librarian."
