“May you live in Interesting Times” When I first heard this quote in the 1994 Movie “Disclosure” it sounded more of a welcoming phrase than a curse. The origin appears to be a Chinese curse: “May you experience much upheaval and trouble in your life” or "It is better to be a dog in a peaceful time than be a man in a chaotic period.“ Perhaps today it is both.

What is Digital Citizenship? We define as: The norms appropriate, responsible behavior with regard to technology use. The examples and statistics are showing us that violations in Digital Citizenship are reaching epidemic proportions. Digital Citizenship must become a high priority for educators in the 21st Century. Where did we begin – where are we going.

Current ISTE NETS-S Dealing with Appropriate Use (updated Summer 2007) 5. Digital Citizenship Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior. Students: advocate and practice safe, legal, and responsible use of information and technology. exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and productivity. demonstrate personal responsibility for lifelong learning. exhibit leadership for digital citizenship.

Changes to NETS·T (updated June 2008) 4. Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices. Teachers: a. advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources b. address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies and providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources c. promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information d. develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using digital-age communication and collaboration tools

Why is Digital Citizenship Important? Providing the tools without explaining how to use them. Between two generations – one that has watched the growth of technology and one that has not known a world without digital opportunities. Key Questions for today: What are the issues related to Digital Citizenship? How do we identify these issues in an organized manner? How are we going to teach these to our students?

Systems approach Once you have an idea of the issues then you can work on solving them. This is the main reason for Digital Citizenship to provide this framework. World-class students – because they have to be. To understand Digital Citizenship need to be able to see all the parts (The Fifth Discipline, P.Senge, 1990/The World Is Flat, T. Friedman, 2006).

The Nine Elements Will go through these elements (with your help) to provide a basic understanding of the issues. Think about your own district/organization and where these elements can fit into your own issues.

Digital Health and Welfare: the elements of physical and psychological well-being related to digital technology use. Houston Enclave Bans Hands-Free Cell Phone Use Near School By Ana Ley August 11, 2008 The Houston enclave of West University Place has banned cell phone use for all drivers, the most stringent law of its kind in the nation. The ban, which applies within a three-block radius of the city's elementary school during school hours, is the latest in a long line of similar laws.

Digital Security (self-protection): the precautions that all technology users must take to guarantee their personal safety and the security of their network.

Digital Access: full electronic participation in society.

Digital Communication: electronic exchange of information.

Digital Etiquette: the standards of conduct expected by other digital technology users.

Digital Rights and Responsibilities: the privileges and freedoms extended to all digital technology users, and the behavioral expectations that come with them

Digital Literacy: the capability to use digital technology and knowing when and how to use it.

Where Do We Go From Here? Where do we begin? -For some it seems overwhelming, once they see the larger picture of Digital Citizenship -Today is the first step, then your plan for Nov. and months to come -Don’t attempt to do all at once (we have identified a few areas which relate to district issues), but still need to understand the framework
