Born of a Woman—Atonement and the Incarnation Key Text 1 John 3:5 NIV “But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin.”

Born of a Woman—Atonement and the Incarnation Initial Words {275} The coming of Jesus into humanity is precisely about the union of the divine and the human. Although the two natures remain distinct, what took place was not simply the indwelling of the divine in the human but a real incarnation.
9
Born of a Woman—Atonement and the Incarnation Initial Words {275} Had one or several of the divine attributes been lost during the Incarnation, we would have had less than the incarnation of God. There was a concealment of the divine in Jesus, yet Deity was always fully present. For the purpose of the atonement it was indispensable to have God in human flesh, because only God can save us.
10
Born of a Woman—Atonement and the Incarnation Quick Look 1. Jesus’ Baptism (Matthew 3:16, 17) 2. Jesus’ Temptations (Matthew 4:1) 3. Jesus’ Healing Ministry (Matthew 9:35)
11
Born of a Woman—Atonement and the Incarnation 1. Jesus’ Baptism Matthew 3:16, 17 NKJV “Then Jesus, when He had been baptized, came up immediately from the water; … and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, ‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.’ ”
12
1. Jesus’ Baptism Its Significance {279} 1. By requesting baptism, Jesus was identifying Himself with sinners. His baptism made it possible for us to be joined to Him through our baptism and to receive the benefits of His at the hands of John. 2. By declaring, “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased”, God was telling Him that His prayer was heard.
13
1. Jesus’ Baptism Its Significance {279} 3. The Godhead was involved and present in the baptism of Jesus. God’s love was flown to His Son as a member of the human race, accepting Him as its Representative. Humans were no longer separated from the love of God, because in Christ a channel through which divine love could reach them was found.
14
Born of a Woman—Atonement and the Incarnation 2. Jesus’ Temptations Matthew 4:1 NKJV “Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.”
15
2. Jesus’ Temptations Contrasted With Adam’s {281} 1. Adam was tempted while in an environment free from corrupting reality of sin; Jesus, in an environment under the influence of evil powers. 2. Adam had an abundance of food, while Jesus was derived of food. 3. Adam was not fasting; Jesus was.
16
2. Jesus’ Temptations Contrasted With Adam’s {281} 4. Both were tempted to satisfy their desire or food apart from the will of God; Adam accepted the food, Jesus didn’t. 5. Adam was tempted to question what God had said and showed a lack of trust in God’s word. Jesus rejected the same temptation. 6. Adam joined Satan in his struggle against God. Jesus remained loyal to the Father.
17
2. Jesus’ Temptations Contrasted With Adam’s {281} Jesus overcame every temptation and remained totally dependent on the Father. He was by nature and by personal election sinless. It is there that we find the very ground of His capacity to save us. The Sinless One became sin for us in order for us to receive by faith the righteousness that was not ours but His.
18
Born of a Woman—Atonement and the Incarnation 3. Jesus’ Healing Ministry Matthew 9:35 NKJV “And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, … healing every sickness and every disease among the people.”
19
3. Jesus’ Healing Ministry Its Implications {283} 1. Through His healing ministry Jesus was overcoming the incursion of death in the fabric of suffering humanity. His future victory over the very kingdom of death was anticipated in His daily healing works. 2. It also served to break down social barriers. He was creating a new humanity at peace with one another.
20
3. Jesus’ Healing Ministry Its Implications {283} 3. It served to restore people to harmony and communion with the Father. Very often His victory over the powers of death led people to believe in Him. Through these encounters Jesus was proclaiming that God accepts any person who comes to Him and that His followers should do likewise.
21
Born of a Woman—Atonement and the Incarnation Final Words {274} Without the Incarnation there would not be forgiveness of sin and reconciliation with God. The incarnation of the Son of God into human flesh was an indispensable element in God’s plan for the salvation of the race.
