3 How is the Education System Organised? NSW Department of Education provides…… Schools (Buildings etc.) Teachers Teaching & Learning experiences based upon BoSTES curriculum Ongoing Assessment Board of Studies Teaching and Educational Standards NSW (BoSTES) provides …. Curriculum RoSA (Record of School Achievement) External Examination – Higher School Certificate Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) – Uses HSC results from BoSTES to rank students (ATAR) on a scale of 0 to 100 for prioritising entry to University Courses throughout NSW

4 HSC REQUIREMENTS To be eligible for a HSC you must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 12 units in the Year 11 Preliminary course and 10 units in the Year 12 HSC course

5 What are units? All courses have a unit value Most courses are 2 units 2 units = 100 marks in the HSC

6 HSC Requirements 6 units must be Board Developed 2 units of English must be studied At least 3 X 2 unit courses At least 4 subjects

8 Preliminary & HSC Timeline Preliminary Course begins Term 1 (2016) and lasts for 3 terms. The HSC Course begins in Term 4 (2016) and lasts 4 terms. Your HSC exams take place in Term 4 (2017) Any leave from school will put your place in Year 11 (or Year 12) at risk. The school may recommend you repeat the course.

9 Something you should know English is the only compulsory subject At least 2 units of English will be counted towards your ATAR

18 Major Projects Many subjects have major HSC projects e.g. Visual Art (Major Work) Society & Culture (Personal Interest Project) Music (Practical Performance) Do not choose too many of these.

19 Mandatory Course Requirements Many subjects have mandatory course requirements Some examples: Geography (Senior Geography Project and Fieldwork) Community and Family Studies (Independent Research Project) Drama (Group Performance / individual project) Do not choose too many of these.

21 VET FRAMEWORK COURSES Industry accreditation Studied on site at Kogarah High School Accredited teachers Can be Preliminary (120 hours) or Preliminary and HSC (240 hours) Optional exam to count to ATAR Involves a work placement Board Developed courses

22 VET Work Placement VET courses involve a mandatory work placement Competency based courses 70 hours per 240 hour course 35 hours in Year 11 + 35 hours in Year 12 Recognised by TAFE and Industry One VET course = 35 hours out of school commitment No more than two recommended

23 If you study a 2 Unit VET course in Year 11 and drop it in Year 12, you still receive 120 hours of nationally recognised vocational accreditation. 2 Unit VET courses

26 Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) To get an ATAR you must have at least 10 Board Developed Units in your HSC course. This is carefully checked at subject selection time Monitored at all times here at Kogarah High School if students change subjects

50 Subject selection process Students interviewed individually on Monday/Tuesday o Students have completed Careers Survey and Worksheet o Students need to bring their school report with them for their interview Students check their school email account to retrieve their password – Tuesday night Logon to the subject selection website www.edval.com.au/login.html your username: school email address your password: sent to you at your email address Print your choices and get parents to sign – return to Ms Hale Letter will go home in Term 4 confirming student subjects for year 11 – very few changes will be allowed next year.

51 The RoSA is a cumulative credential in that it allows students to accumulate their academic results until they leave school. records completed Stage 5 and Preliminary Stage 6 courses and grades, and participation in any uncompleted Preliminary Stage 6 courses. is of specific use to students leaving school prior to the HSC.

52 The RoSA Any time a student wants an up-to-date snapshot of their academic progress, a transcript called a Student eRecord can be accessed via Students Online and printed or emailed.Students Online Students who go on to complete the HSC will see all their Stage 6 (Year 11 and 12) courses and results on their HSC.
