WHAT DO THE BLUE BOXES MEAN? How to ID and manage environmental risks using your Farm Environment Plan July 2015

 Sections 12-18 FEP  The plan part of a FEP  ID risks and create a plan to address them What your FEP is all about!

LAND MANAGEMENT UNITS Aim: To understand environmental risks on your property to target and prioritise good management practices  Divide your farm that should be managed in a similar way  Usually depends on:  Irrigation Type  Soil Type  Land Use  Property location  Nutrient budget blocks should fall within LMUs on your property

LAND MANAGEMENT UNITS STEP 1: IRRIGATION TYPE  Divide LMUs by paddock  i.e. include dryland corners if treated same way  Use major irrigation type within paddock

LAND MANAGEMENT UNITS STEP 1: IRRIGATION TYPE Rotorainer Pivot Dryland LMU 1 LMU 2 LMU 3

LAND MANAGEMENT UNITS STEP 2: SOIL TYPE  Separate where you can manage differently  Use major soil type within paddock  Use your knowledge of your farm

LAND MANAGEMENT UNITS STEP 2: SOIL TYPE LMU 1 LMU 2

LAND MANAGEMENT UNITS STEP 3: LAND USE  Different property = different LMU if under same FEP  Create different LMU if permanently different land use  i.e. dairy farm and dairy support  Treat rotations as same land use end up over whole property over time

LAND MANAGEMENT UNITS STEP 3: LAND USE Dairy Support Arable LMU 1 LMU 2

LAND MANAGEMENT UNITS LMU 1: Rotorainer, light soil dairy support LMU 2: Rotorainer, heavy soil dairy support LMU 3: Pivot, heavy soil arable LMU 4: Dryland, heavy soil arable

LAND MANAGEMENT UNITS STEP 4: RISK ID  Environmental risks intrinsic to system, land and land use  Exclude day to day management

LAND MANAGEMENT UNITS STEP 4: RISK ID  What are the relative risks between LMUs?  E.g. light soil irrigated LMU vs heavy soil irrigated LMU  Both have risk of irrigation inefficiency and N leaching  Lighter soils greater risk than heavier

RISK MANAGEMENT SECTIONS 14-18 What do you need to achieve?  SHOW you meet environmental targets  2020 for existing shareholders  Now for new shareholders

RISK MANAGEMENT SECTIONS 14-18 Questions 1. See where you are at 2. Give you ideas

RISK MANAGEMENT SECTIONS 14-18 Tips for Answering Questions Be honest!  There are no wrong answers Answers should reflect what the auditor will see  First season, take your best guess and update later

RISK MANAGEMENT SECTIONS 14-18 = Definitely not on track, prioritise action to sort out soon = Ok for now, room for improvement = Keep it up! = Top of the class! Have a sticker

RISK MANAGEMENT SECTIONS 14-18 Actions Your “to do” list Your plan to meet targets Need to be measurable

RISK MANAGEMENT SECTIONS 14-18 Red Boxes YOU ARE NOT IN TROUBLE! Indicate not on track to meet target Should be a priority this season Generally pretty basic

RISK MANAGEMENT SECTIONS 14-18 Blue Boxes Your better practice “to do” list Aim for Good or Best Practice if a risk in LMUs Can put anything in there Can have a longer timeframe

RISK MANAGEMENT SECTIONS 14-18 What do you need to do?  Depends on:  Potential and relative risk  How far current system is from achieving GMP Ultimately Good Management Practice is specific to your property!

RISK MANAGEMENT SECTIONS 14-18 Still no idea?  Easy wins for 2015-16 season:  Soil moisture monitoring  Good records  DIY Maintenance  Know your system
