Citizenship is… To be a member of a nation or country and to have full rights and responsibilities under the law.

The Application Process: only open to legal immigrants
Immigrate legally and send a Declaration of Intent to INS If over 18 years old, file an application. Live in the US for 5 years OR for 3 years if married to a US citizen Good character (must pass a background check) Take classes in English, US History, & Gov Interview with the INS

Gaining Citizenship Pass a Citizenship test Applicant must take an oath of allegiance to the United States Officially declared a citizen Children (under the age of 18) of the new citizen are also made citizens at this time

They become citizens of another country Some have lost it for threatening to overthrow the US government They have served in the military of another country
