With SchoolSite Redistricting Boundary Planning Made Easy

Things you can accomplish using DDP’s SchoolSite Redistricting Program Can create unlimited number of boundary scenarios using current or projected student counts Using current students you can redistrict using student data such as ethnicity or program info Can easily use a variety of grade ranges for exploring grade re-configuration studies Can create attendance matrices that help show the district’s current Open Enrollment percentages Ability to create Street Directories

Exercise 1 Creating a Redistricting Plan Open ArcMap as a blank map document Add in SchoolSite Redistricting Toolbar Pull down the “Redistricting” menu go to the “Redistricting Admin” and click on “Create Plan” Click on “Create a new SchoolSite Geodatabase” Save the new GDB onto the C-Drive and call it: plans_July09 Give the Plan a Name (i.e.: ES Plan 1) You can also add Notes and Comments

Exercise 1 Creating a Redistricting Plan LOADING THE INDIVIDUAL DATA LAYERS FOR THE REDISTRICTING PLANS FOR THIS EXERCISE GO WITH THE DEFAULTS: Create an “Elementary School” Plan Using “Current Boundaries” For this exercise we will be using “Current” student data, not projections

Exercise 1 Creating a Redistricting Plan After clicking on Finish, the data layers will be copied and a Redistricting Plan is created

Setting Up the Plan Properties for Reports and Tables The statistics you choose will be displayed in the plan report and statistics window

Time for Exercise 2 Begin Exercise 2 (page 4)Begin Exercise 2 (page 4) “Setting Up How to View the Statistics Table for a Plan” “Setting Up How to View the Statistics Table for a Plan”

Reassigning Attendance Areas with the Redistricting Extension The redistricting software allows you to easily reassign regions from one attendance area to another by shifting individual, or groups of, study areas

Reassigning Attendance Areas with the Redistricting Extension The redistricting software allows you to easily reassign regions from one attendance area to another by shifting Study Areas (neighborhoods) You can choose study areas individually or as a group by using a line, circle or polygon

Reassigning Attendance Areas with the Redistricting Extension While you select certain Study Areas (highlighted in light blue), you can “preview” the impact by the “Proposed Statistics” Tab before you actually make the change RED ATTENDANCES AREAS ARE ONES THAT WILL LOSE STUDENTS WITH THE CHANGE WHILE BLUE ATTENDANCE AREAS ARE ONES THAT WILL GAIN STUDENTS

Time for Exercise 3 Begin Exercise 3 (page 7)Begin Exercise 3 (page 7) “Reassigning Attendance Areas” “Reassigning Attendance Areas”

Reporting in SchoolSite Within the Redistricting Extension you use a combination of the Plan Report, Statistics Window and Plan Properties buttons to create your reports buttons to create your reports And there is an Identify button that will allow you to interactively select a Study Area or group of Study Areas to see how many students are in each or altogether

Printing Reports You have control over the font size, page orientation, title, footnote, starting page number, and data

Exporting Reports Export to a Excel, Text, or dBase file and format in any word processing or spreadsheet software, such as MS Word TM or Excel TM

Changing the Symbology within the Redistricting Extension

Other Useful Abilities within the Redistricting Extension Creating Plans Off of Student ProjectionsCreating Plans Off of Student Projections Elementary, middle and high school attendance matricesElementary, middle and high school attendance matrices Street DirectoriesStreet Directories Classroom Loading TablesClassroom Loading Tables

You can create an unlimited number of Redistricting Plans off any student forecasts generated by DDP’s SchoolSite Projection software Projected student counts Represents student data for Fall 2010 Creating Plans Off of Projections

Attendance Matrices Extremely helpful for visualizing your “Open Enrollment” (compares enrollment counts to residence counts) You can use the data from the redistricting reports to make a matrix in MS Excel.

Street Directories View and print streets with their address ranges within each attendance area, in a report form

Classroom Loading Table Helpful in determining the need for more or fewer classrooms at school sites as you adjust boundaries

Clicking on the HELP (?) Buttons will launch DDP’s extensive Help System extensive Help System for Redistricting for Redistricting Getting Help with the Redistricting

Time for Exercises 4 and 5 Begin Exercise 4 (page 10)Begin Exercise 4 (page 10) “Creating an Attendance Matrix” and then, at the end we will “Close a Plan”

QUESTIONS? Please come by the Doctor’s Office. We are glad to address questions directly related to your District.
