The Power of HART Using HART Communication to Improve Process Operation and Better Manage Plant Assets Ron Helson HART Communication Foundation Austin, TX
2
Things You May Know About HART
Most smart instruments use HART Communication HART smart field devices are used interchangeably with traditional mA analog only units Hand Held Communicators are often used to perform device set-up, calibration, commissioning and periodic maintenance functions PC-based instrument management tools can remotely communicate with HART devices to manage calibration and other instrument parameters from central locations (instrument shop or control room) HART = Savings in Installation & Maintenance
3
Things You May Not Know About HART
All HART smart devices provide process data for plant operation continuously - 24/7 HART provides access to all device data while the 4-20mA analog signal is being used for control Information about the status (health) of the field device and quality of the mA signal is part of every message The Primary Variable is transmitted as a 4-20mA signal and also as digital value Many devices have process information (measured or calculated) in addition to the Primary Variable This Data is VALUABLE $$$
4
HART Basics Digital FSK allows additional information
to be carried on the same pair of wires with the 4-20 mA Analog Signal Simultaneously and Transparently
5
The HART FSK Signal The Familiarity of 4-20 mA…
with the Benefits of Digital Communication
6
All Data is easily available to Plant Systems!
Valuable Data 35-40 data items are Standard in every HART device Device Information Basic Calibration Information Process Variables Diagnostic Status Alerts Use this Data to Improve Process Operations and Better Manage Plant Assets All Data is easily available to Plant Systems!
7
Digital Process Variables
Many HART devices support more than one process measurement or calculated value HART provides access to All Process Variables in the device All Digital Process Variable data includes: IEEE Floating Point Value Standard Engineering Units Code Data Quality Status Primary Variable transmitted on the mA current loop continuously
8
Status & Diagnostic Alerts
All HART smart field devices continuously self-assess and monitor their performance Diagnostic status information is returned with every message Status Alerts include quality of 4-20mA signal and process variable data Continuous communication increases integrity of control system information Get early warning of device problems Automatically track and detect changes in Range or Engineering Units Validate PV and Loop Current values at control system with data from the source field device
9
Unleash the POWER of HART
Example Applications Is the pH electrode cracked or coated? Has the temperature sensor failed? Is the measurement accurate? Is the measurement within range? Are the impulse lines clogged? Has the pressure sensor been over-ranged? Has the device been left in “loop test” position? Is the air pressure adequate to operate the valve? Is the control valve operating smoothly over the full range? Has the device failed or locked-up? Will the Emergency Shut Down valve operate if required? Unleash the POWER of HART
10
Use HART Full-time to Unleash the POWER
100% 100% Value Gap $$$ Commissioning Troubleshooting Documentation Database Validation Automated Records Diagnostic Alerts for proactive action PV Good / Bad status for improved safety / reliability Validate accuracy of control system information Full access to multi-variable instrument information Integrate data with ERP/CMMS Systems Savings / Benefits RELATIVE VALUE Savings / Benefits Partial Value 0% 100% 100% 0% Part-Time Communication FULL-TIME Communication Integrated with Plant Systems
11
Getting HART in Plant Systems
Cost-effective interfaces support integration with plant systems Many control systems offer direct HART interface and support use of HART data through-out Third party products support use with non-HART capable systems Multiplexers - Some integral with FTA Gateways - HART to Ethernet, HART to Modbus, HART to Profibus, more... Single Device Interfaces - Transform digital process variables and status alerts into 4-20mA signals and/or contact closures HMI Engineering Maintenance HAR T D A T A HART DA T A Controller I/O

Solutions for HART Integration
13
Using HART in Plant Systems
Continuously Monitor Device Status & Diagnostics Device Malfunction Loop Current Fixed Device Needs Maintenance Validate Integrity of Control System Information Read Loop Current, PV and Range values from device Verify accuracy of system data Ensure scaling factors in system match field device - 20mA & 4mA points Get Full Value from Multi-Variable devices Access Secondary Process Variables for operator display, trending, or control Use additional process measurements and calculated values to improve plant operation and manage assets
14
Monitoring HART Smart Valves
Actual stem position Identify sticking or stuck condition, % trim wear, poor response Actuator Pressure Low pressure from clogged filter, leaking connections or torn diaphragm Temperature Inside Positioner Set Point Target Stem Position Fugitive Emission Potential Positioner malfunction Partial Stroking for ESD Valve testing Specialized Diagnostic Software Packages
15
Single Device HART Interface Solution
SPA uses HART communication to get process variable and diagnostic data from device and converts information into 4-20mA signals and/or contact closures 4-20mA Proportional to PV HART Field Device HART Instrument Fault Alarm Second Variable (SV) High/Low Alarm Third Variable (TV) High/Low Alarm Fourth Variable (FV) High/Low Alarm 4-20mA Proportional to SV, TV, or FV One Wire from Field to Control Room Multiple Analog Signals and Alarm Contacts to the Control System
16
Getting HART on Plant Networks
OPC Server provides easy access to HART device data anywhere on plant network Allows several applications to access data in a HART device at the same time Enables popular HMI and Trending packages to access data in HART devices Connect to one or thousands of devices using common HART I/O systems & interfaces Get HART Data on Your Desktop HART SERVER TOOL
17
Other Things You Should Know
HART is Safe, Secure, and Available Tested and Accepted global standard Supported by all major instrumentation manufacturers Saves Time and Money Install and commission devices in fraction of the time Enhanced communications and diagnostics reduce maintenance Low or no additional cost by many suppliers Improves Plant Operation and Product Quality Additional process variables and performance indicators Continuous device status for early detection of warnings Digital capability ensures easy integration with plant networks Protects Your Asset Investments Compatible with existing instrumentation systems and people Allows benefits to be achieved incrementally No need to replace entire system HART = High VALUE + LOW RISK
