HISTORY OF TELEVISION IN NEW ZEALAND 1960, June 1 - Channel 2 launches in Auckland with two hours per night, two nights per week of black and white Television 1963 - TV viewership reaches 300,000 viewers

HISTORY OF TELEVISION IN NEW ZEALAND 1973 – Colour television arrives in New Zealand 1975, April 1 - TV ONE begins its first broadcast. By June TV2 has also launched. The two channels are officially in competition with each other 1979 - Television sets are in 95% of NZ homes

HISTORY OF TELEVISION IN NEW ZEALAND 1980 - TVNZ is formed as State Owned Enterprise (SOE) 1986 - Legislation is passed that requires SOE’s to run as commercially successful businesses 1989 - The market deregulates. TV3 launches in 1989 and Sky in 1990

2003, February - TVNZ becomes a crown-owned company. Advertising revenue surpasses $300m for the first time 2007, February - Regional ad breaks are no longer broadcast on Sky’s digital 2008 - Television viewership is now estimated at 3.8 million 2009 - Full regional breaks are offered on TV ONE. TVNZ 6 & 7 also broadcast on Sky Television’s digital platform HISTORY OF TELEVISION IN NEW ZEALAND
