Migration, Progress, Youth, and Education

Clandestine Migration across the Mediterranean In 2014, up to 3,072 migrants are believed to have died in the Mediterranean, compared with an estimate of 700 in 2013 (hypothermia, drowning) (IOM, 2014 report on “Fatal Journeys”) Since the year 2000, over 22,000 migrants have lost their lives trying to reach Europe. Over 112,000 irregular migrants were detected by Italian authorities in the first eight months of 2014, almost three times as many as in all of 2013. Many are fleeing conflict, persecution and poverty, with Eritreans and Syrians constituting the largest share of arrivals in Italy this year.

Questions about Dreams of Migration among Ethiopian Young Men Why does migration represent progress for Ethiopian youth? Do you think it does? Does migration represent self-hatred, denigration of Ethiopia, or something else (if so, what)? Are the dreams of migration among Ethiopian youth irrational or rational, in your opinion?

Rural vs. Urban Young Men What differences or similarities did you observe between the young men in Jimma (Hope is Cut) and the young men in “Black Gold” in terms of: Educational history Dreams and hopes of education Occupational opportunities In Hope is Cut, farming is presented as an honorable occupation. Did it seem that way in “Black Gold” or were there only financial problems (not status ones) with farming?

Chinese Investment in Africa: Win-Win? Enabling Chinese access to natural resources (oil, copper) Enabling African governments to develop infrastructure (roads, dams, railroads) that they did not have the resources for Allows African countries to be less dependent on “the West” Little concern for democracy & freedom of speech New kinds of racism emerging Lack of technology/knowledge transfer

Progress Should we expect progress and improvement in the world and our lives over time? What are the psychological or emotional effects of believing in progress? Are there environmental consequences? How are hope and capitalism related or not related?

Education as a Solution Should societal and personal resources (financial, imaginative, and emotional) be directed towards education? In Ethiopia? In the United States? If not education, then where should it be directed? Migration? Or?
