Lesson Essential Question: What causes heat transfer in the troposphere? 1.How would you describe or define the word temperature?

Go over Bellringer and add new LEQ to map. Pass back graded papers. Vocab Previewing Watch Heat and Temperature Video Complete the Heat and Temperature notes.

WORD SPLASH temperature conduction heat thermometer convection thermal energy convection current

Temperature The average amount of energy of motion of each particle in a substance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1zO nyC4RgQ

Temperature and the Movement of Molecules The iced tea is cold, so its molecules move SLOWLY. The herbal tea is hot, so its molecules move FAST.

Temperature and the Movement of Molecules HOT - molecules move FAST. COLD - molecules move SLOWLY. Thermal Energy (Heat Energy) – The total energy of MOTION in the particles of a substance. A pot of tea would have more thermal energy than a cup of tea because there are more molecules!

Temperature Heat causes the molecules in the thermometer liquid to move quickly and expand!

Temperature Lack of heat causes the molecules in the thermometer liquid to move slowly, contract and sink!

Temperature Measured in Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin 0˚C 32 ˚F 100˚C 212 ˚F

Temperature Temperature Conversions: °C = 5 / 9 (°F – 32) °F = 9 / 5 °C + 32 Convert 72 °F to °CConvert 2 °C to °F

Which graph correctly shows the effect of heat energy on the motion of molecules of matter?

The transfer of thermal energy from one object to another because of a difference in temperature. Heat

Radiation The direct transfer of energy from electromagnetic waves. Examples: Heat from the sun, holding hands in front of a fire/heater, burner on stove giving off heat.

Conduction The direct transfer of energy from one substance to another that is touching. Examples: A pot sitting on the stove, a heating pad resting on your back, feeling for a fever, touching the hotplate.

Convection The transfer of energy by the movement of a fluid. Examples: Boiling water, lava lamp (warm fluid rising and cool fluid sinking).

Convection Currents The circulation of a fluid as it alternately heats up and cools down. ***MAIN WAY TO MOVE HEAT THROUGH THE TROPOSPHERE!

How Heat Is Transferred

Wednesday, August 19, 2015 HOT HOT HOT TIPS ASSIGNMENT DUE Friday!

1.List as many facts as you can since we began this unit on Monday. 2.After 5 minutes, get up and find a partner. 3.Find one idea your partner has on their list that you don’t have and jot it down. 4.Once you give an idea and get an idea, move on to another partner.
