2 Think Safe. Act Safe. Be Safe. Answer Key: 1.(True) Medical care is paid for by UC Davis to help you recover from an injury or illness caused by work. Temporary disability benefits are paid if you lose wages because your injury prevents you from doing your usual job while recovering. Permanent disability benefits are paid if you don’t recover Completely. Death benefits are paid to your spouse, children or other dependents if you die from a job injury or illness. 2.(D) All of the above. Your department has an Injury and Illness Prevention Program that includes worker training, workplace inspections and procedures for correcting unsafe conditions promptly. Learn about and participate in your employer’s program and report unsafe conditions promptly. 3.(False) Reporting all work-related injuries immediately is essential to ensure you receive appropriate medical care, and to making sure that you don’t lose out on Workers’ Compensation benefits because of delays in reporting. 4.(B) Family Medical Leave Act. FMLA is based on a Federal law and is administered by the U.S. Department of Labor. Through FMLA, an eligible employee can take up to a total of twelve work weeks of paid or unpaid leave to care for a family member, because of the birth or adoption of a child, or because the employee is unable to work due to a serious health condition. For full details about FMLA eligibility, contact the UC Davis Workers’ Compensation office at 530-757-3264. 5.(D) The employee should only return to work when the physician, Employee Health Services or another authorized health care professional provides a medical release. 6.(False) If you are injured and can’t perform your normal duties but can return to work, your supervisor will assign you to modified duty. This accommodation must be provided for up to 60 calendar days. 7.(A, B and C) For Workers’ Compensation benefits to be applied quickly and correctly, any work- place injury or illness must be reported to UC Davis Workers’ Compensation and the employee’s supervisor as soon as it occurs. It is also vital that the employee receive medical care immediately, whether it is first aid in the workplace or a visit to a medical office or emergency room. 8.(B) Employees are paid Temporary Disability (TD) payments for lost wages only if disabled for more than three days. The first three days are not paid unless the employee is disabled for more than 14 days. 9.(D) All of the above! Workers’ Compensation insurance is fully funded by the employer, in this case the University of California. Since the University’s budget is funded by taxpayer money, California taxpayers are ultimately responsible for paying for UC Davis Workers’ Compensation benefits. Since most UC Davis employees are also California taxpayers, they are indirectly paying as well. Intentional misuse of Workers’ Compensation benefits is not only criminal fraud, it hurts all taxpayers and undermines the legitimate role this important program plays in the lives of employees. 10.(False) Becoming ill or being injured at work are not in themselves reasons for disciplinary action. The Workers’ Compensation program exists to provide support and assistance to employees.
