Literacy Goals and Action Plan

Goal #1 The Plymouth North community will demonstrate and develop a school- wide culture that prioritizes and promotes literacy development.

Action Steps All teachers will display student work. –Create walkthrough reports –Publicly recognize teachers –Teachers will display work in classroom –Anonymous walkthroughs –Departments will display exemplary work school wide

Action Steps The school will publicly recognize student academic achievement. –PNN segment on Literacy – at least once a month –Announcement of student achievement on website –Team will designate peer leader of NHS member to maintain display case –Librarian will solicit examples of student achievement for OCM

Action Steps All teachers will provide timely feedback on student work. –Departments establish parameters for timeliness of feedback –Teachers make use of assignment specific rubrics

Action Steps Advisories will support literacy development. –Students will maintain portfolios within advisories –Advisors will be responsible for storing portfolios –Current articles and readings based on student interest will be integrated

Action Steps The school will visibly promote literacy development. –Poster contest through art dept. promoting literacy –Create a schedule for departmental display –Website will be maintained with literacy information –Teachers will create area in classroom to display work

Action Steps All departments will designate time for content related reading. –Lead teachers and librarian will provide resources –Teachers will assign time for content related reading

Action Steps The school will designate time for silent sustained reading. –Communicate objectives on first day of school –Literacy Team will develop guidelines –Teacher/librarian will provide supplementary materials –Time will be provided for Silent Sustained Reading

Goal #2 Teachers will consistently integrate high quality reading, writing and vocabulary instruction to improve all students’ literacy development and content learning.

Action Steps Each department or team will provide departmental literacy sharing opportunities. –Departments will meet to share strategy use and discuss ways to improve or sustain use in their content area –Communication among teachers

Action Steps All teachers will participate in at least two professional development sessions to learn common set of strategies. –“Exercise” survey –Strategy menu

Action Steps All teachers will model and teach students the literacy support strategies multiple times to strengthen content literacy and learning. –Literacy menus –Walkthroughs –Report findings/results to Literacy Team and faculty –Literacy Team will discuss ways to improve and sustain literacy use in content area classrooms
