2 Criminal Cases Felony: A serious crime. Crimes against people: murder, manslaughter, rape, assault and kidnapping Crimes against property: excessive vandalism (over $250), fraud and larceny (burglary, robbery and theft). Victimless Crime: illegal drugs and gambling.

3 Criminal Cases Continued… Misdemeanor- A minor crime. ticket, summons, shoplifting or minor vandalism (under $250)

4 Criminal Cases Concluded… Prosecution: government employee that brings a charge against the accused. Defendant: A person who is accused of a crime.

5 Civil Cases Legal action taken because of a dispute between two parties. Plaintiff files a lawsuit to recover money, property, or due to injury. Defendant is the person being sued.
