1
Why e-Learning Virtual classrooms or independent study. Forms support, collaboration and discussion. Supports learning by doing. Used by schools, corporations, libraries, and private companies.
2
What is e-learning Delivered via computer and internet. Interactive content uses multimedia. Instructor-led or self paced individual study.
3
What is e-learning continued Uses text and pictures, such as illustrations, photos, animation, or video. Uses tools such as wikis, discussion boards, video and email. Can be taken everywhere and at any time of day.
4
Cognitive Theory Essential Processing of visual and auditory facts. Instructional information is processed by the student. Management of working memory to organize and integrate previous knowledge.
5
Cognitive Theory continued Pictures Verbal Integrate Prior Knowledge Select Images Select Words ImagesSounds Multimedia Presentation EyesEars Add to the users long term memory
6
Information Acquisition Instructors deliver information to the student. Examples and practice gained from instruction. Words and pictures develop from content. The limited capacity of the mind limits the process.
7
Knowledge Construction Build the learner’s cognitive processing. Use experiences to process facts into information. Interpret information and evaluate facts for cognitive processing. Convert information into knowledge.
8
Working Memory The integration of words and pictures is made easier by lessons that present the verbal and visual information together. (Clark, 2009, p. 39) Words and pictures form a cohesive arrangement. Ideas integrate existing knowledge to long-term memory.
9
Long-term Memory Mentally organize material in verbal and pictorial images. Uses working memory to store knowledge. Incorporated into the existing knowledge and stored in long- term memory. Animated clip art – showing mind incorporating facts
10
Response Strengthening “Retrieval of new knowledge and skills from long-term memory into working memory when needed later.”(Clark, 2009, pp37-41) Response is based on rewards or punishments.
11
Multimedia Learning Words and corresponding pictures depict the content. Video conveys information in an instructional method. Makes an online class interesting to students. Check out this link for more information - Building a Critical Components
12
Using Multimedia for eLearning What is multimedia: YouTube Videos Podcasts made by instructors or students to explain or lecture Videos used to explain a concept. Interactive flash cards and flash video
13
How do people learn with e-learning knowledge construction Text, video, lecture Computer Students use e-learning on computers to gather information and add to their knowledge. Students learn by processing visual and auditory material. Cognitive development and mental processing. Organizing words and images and adding them to long-term memory.
14
Putting it all together knowledge construction Multimedia learning Memory information acquisition Students access the content that is included in the class. They learn from meeting the class objectives and work assigned. They need to evaluate the content and add it into their knowledge base. Students can use prior knowledge and reorganize it to form a new knowledge base.
15
“Technology-based delivery that can make ongoing adjustments to the instructional path based on learners’ responses.” (Clark, 2009, p. 23)
