WHAT IS AUGMENTED REALITY?  Augmented reality is a computer-based technology noted for its ability to overlay video, images and text on analogue print objects such as books, as well as provide opportunities for interaction with objects in virtual spaces. The additional information is “hidden” from normal view.

AUGMENTED REALITY VOCABULARY  Trigger Image – The print piece or analogue piece that initiates the AR  Overlay – What happens inside the mobile device when the app sees the trigger image.  Parent/Child – The relationship between a trigger image and an overlay  Scene – The Unity Asset where all the trigger images and overlays live together  Project – The combination of all the different assets (images, overlays, scenes)  Kinesthetic Interactivity – How much movement does the user have to provide for a full experience?

5. AUGMENTED REALITY IS NOT VIRTUAL REALITY

6. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?  Virtual Reality completely immerses the user in a digital environment. It responds to movement and action from the user but doesn’t interact with the existing environment.  Augmented Reality places itself into the existing reality. It relies on cues from the user and from the space around the user to function. HINT: If the screen is completely covered by digital content it is probably not augmented reality.

8. BBC FROZEN PLANET  Using a video capture screen and augmented reality, visitors are able to experience being in the frozen tundra with nature.

9. OUTDOOR AUGMENTED REALITY MUSEUM AT THE MARKET SQUARE  For the municipality of Spijkenisse (near Rotterdam, the Netherlands), we have created an app (Museum op de Markt) and a special AR viewer to visualize the old square in the 1950s and tell stories about the past at the town square.

10. NIGHT LIGHTS  In this installation YesYesNo teamed up with The Church, Inside Out Productions and Electric Canvas to turn the Auckland Ferry Building into an interactive playground. [To] create an installation that would go beyond merely projection on buildings and allow viewers to become performers, by taking their body movements and amplifying them 5 stories tall.
