Last time, we asked you to... Bring an ‘live’ issue or concern for which you would like some coaching! Could also be an issue sensitively presented in role where you act as someone you are currently coaching... Bring a brief paragraph explaining the issue and context for this coaching need, ready to share with others Take some time to reflect on these before we begin the session.

To  Develop your mentoring/coaching skills set  Explore issues associated with these roles  Develop skills in managing a professional dialogue or in learning conversations with students  Work collaboratively with colleagues in developing coaching practice in our own contexts

To  Explore responding to a range of scenarios in coaching situations, reflecting especially on your use of both verbal and non-verbal language  Practice identifying the effectiveness of coaching skills in others

 Look carefully at the scenario described  What coaching context does this appear to fall into?  What content might you plan into a coaching session?  Use the question stems to help you prepare for this coaching conversation

 In triads, we would like you to work as coach, coachee and observer (you will have an opportunity for everyone to take each role this afternoon, so everyone has a chance for coaching on your ‘live’ issue’.)  Please begin by sharing your brief paragraphs, which explaining the issue and context for this coaching need, so that everyone can consider what questions and strategies they might want you to use

 Have a look at this observation tool for evaluating the impact of coaching, familiarising yourself with the content for when you are in role as the observer – any questions?  In your initial roles as coach, coachee and observer, role-play the scenario you had brought today  Observers – experiment using the observation tool....  At the end of each role-play, please provide feedback to the coach on what you have identified in the effectiveness of their coaching skills

 How helpful was using the observation tool?  What connections do you draw between the tool and some of the theoretical frameworks we have discussed?  How else might it be used?  How might you be able to adapt this to your own contexts?

 Next session: ‘Scaling Up and Moving On’  10.7.12  Practice observing coaching conversations and giving feedback to other coaches if possible  Reflect on how the course has helped your practice and how you may develop coaching further in your own context
