2. What To Bring To A Shelter GENERAL SHELTERS ALLOW APPROXIMATELY 20-SQUARE-FEET PER PERSON. DO NOT BRING ANYTHING THAT IS NOT ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY FOR A 24 - 48 HOUR STAY.

3. Food  If you have the need for special foods (Ensure, etc.) you may bring them with you. High energy foods such as peanut butter, jelly, crackers, granola bars, trail mix, and other snack foods may be a good idea if you get hungry in between meals. If necessary bring special dietary foods - such as diabetic, low salt, liquid diet, baby food and formula. Don't forget a manual can opener.

4. Clothing and Bedding  One complete change of clothing including footwear. A cot or sleeping bag and pillow. Rain gear and sturdy shoes.

5. Personal Items  Washcloth, small towel, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, sanitary napkins, paper towels, toilet paper, towelettes, etc.

6. Medications, First-Aid supplies  Medications - clearly marked with your name, dosage, type of medication, and prescribing physician. You must be able to take all medications by yourself. Any dressing changes needed.

7. Important Papers  Identification and valuable papers (insurance documents, etc.), Name and address of doctors, Name and address of nearest relative not living in area.

8. Pets  Pets are not allowed at general shelters unless they are service animals

9. Miscellaneous  Bring a cell phone if you have one. It may come in handy. Games, cards, toys, battery powered radios, flashlights (no candles or lanterns), batteries, or other reasonable items you may need are welcome too. Take a bath and eat before you leave home.  Not Allowed: alcoholic beverages, or weapons. Smoking is not allowed in shelters.

10. Animal Control Animal Control St. Lucie County's Animal Control Division is dedicated to serving the unincorporated areas of the county enforcing state and local statutes regarding animals, while at the same time working to reduce the amount of unwanted pets in the county. With a staff of three officers and one coordinator, the Animal Control Division receives more than 13,500 animal complaints, responds to more than 120 bite cases, tends to more than 275 sick or injured animals, investigates 400 cases of animal cruelty and picks up nearly 2,000 strays annually.

11. Animal Control  St. Lucie County's Animal Control works in close cooperation with the Humane Society of St. Lucie, which serves as the official animal shelter for the county, to help educate the public about the importance of spaying and neutering your dogs and cats.  The Animal Control Division also maintains and enforces a pet registration program for dog and cat owners in the unincorporated areas of the county.  For more information about St. Lucie County's Animal Control Division call (772) 462-8120.
