History of Project Joint interest in sea turtle conservation identified at the 8 th LMR Panel Meeting (June 2011) Focus on green sea turtles, loggerheads and leatherbacks Workshop held April 10, 20012 in Shanghai Workshop Outcomes: Priority Research Projects: 1. Biology & Ecology: Develop proposal on a specific area/region to assess foraging ecology 2. Distribution: Analyze tagging data mapped to oceanographic parameters
3
Potential Research Projects Assess stock structure (genetics & tagging) Identify critical habitat Evaluate impacts from environmental contaminants Develop ecosystem approaches to management Stock enhancement techniques Bycatch mitigation: Gear modifications, decision tools, training/outreach on safe practices Enhance baseline data collection Management: Strategies for managing natural reserves Climate change: Impacts on spawning/feeding migrations and nesting beaches
4
Mechanisms for Collaboration Establishment of a joint sea turtle working group [U.S. Leads: George Balazs (PIFSC), Jeff Seminoff (SWFSC); Chinese Leads: Huang Honghui (SCFRI), Zhang Feiyan (Gangkou Sea Turtle Reserve)] Data sharing and analyses Scientist exchanges
5
Scientist Exchange Zhang Feiyan visit to PIFSC September 2012 (10 days) Participated in sea turtle necropsies, sea turtle capture, visited foraging areas Possible Next Steps: Sea turtle health assessment and necropsy workshop Scientist exchange: NOAA researchers visiting China Green turtle blood research Green turtle foraging ecology (in China) Survey methods (improve knowledge of turtle distribution along Chinese coast)
