1 CHAPTER 7 PAINTING REVIEW Paint = pigment (powdered color) + medium (liquid binder) Support – canvas, paper, wood, wall, etc. to which paint is applied Ground – a primer added to a support to prepare the surface for painting

2 Encaustic – pigment + wax or resin medium Artists can create a richly textured and layered surface

3 Fresco – pigments + water applied to plaster Usually a wall painting technique; requires careful planning

4 Tempera – pigment + water and egg yolk (traditional medium) Very permanent; color lasts a long time

5 Oil – pigment + linseed oil Usually used on wood or canvas with a gesso ground Dries slowly; colors can be blended subtly

6 Watercolor – pigment + water and gum arabic Colors are transparent; can be layered

7 Gouache – watercolor with white pigment added for opacity Colors are more vivid than with watercolor

8 Acrylic – pigment + acrylic resin (plastic) Very permanent; also versatile

9 Collage – a mixture of painting mediums and real objects glued to painting surface Off the Wall! Contemporary artists are pushing the boundaries of painting: -non-rectangular shapes -leave the wall altogether (floor pieces)
