WHAT IS MECHANICAL ENGINEERING? The branch of engineering that includes the design, construction and operation of machinery. Dates back to ancient Greece and China, where mechanisms like screw pumps, steam engines, clocks, and even gears were invented. Mechanical engineering turned analytical with Newton’s Laws of Motion and the invention of calculus.

SUB-DISCIPLINES OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING Automotive – Focuses of car manufacturing industry Aerospace/Aeronautical – Focuses on the aircraft and space vehicle industry Biomechatronics – Intersection of mechanized devices and the human body Marine – Production and maintenance of machines on ships, boats, oil rigs, or marine vessels Mechatronics – Combination of mechanical engineering, computer engineering, electronic engineering, systems design engineering, and control engineering to focus on technology Nuclear – Usage of nuclear energy as the main source of energy Robotics – Combination of computer engineering and electrical engineering to construct and design the application of robots. Nanotechnology – Fabrication of new devices the size of atoms and molecules Acoustical – Focuses on the suppression and generation of sound

GROWTH OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING Mechanical Engineers are expected to have employment of 5% increase from 2012 to 2022. With the wide variety of fields, there are a wide range of products that demand for more services. With emerging technology rising, Mechatronics and Robotics are a couple of many disciplines that will need future engineers. When earning a degree through mechanical engineering, many more job opportunities can often be applied in other engineering specialties.
5
JOBS IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING Training and Background Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering Master’s degree in mechanical engineering Professional Engineer license Job Opportunities: Once you are trained, and licensed; job opportunities with automobile manufacturers, utility companies and government agencies are now open to you Getting a master’s or doctoral degree in ME allows you to seek a job as a professor or researcher at the University level. Mechanical Engineers are expected to have employment of 5% from 2012 to 2022.
6
YOUNG ENGINEERS IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING Meet with other professionals to gather requirements for the design project Use computer-aided drafting and design applications to design specifications of the mechanical device Develop a prototype
7
YOUNG ENGINEERS IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING Test the prototype to ensure that it’s working properly Ensure that the manufacturing of the device is done properly Work in the field to ensure that the device is installed and functioning properly Run tests, inspect and observe the device while it runs.
8
SENIOR ENGINEERS IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING As you gain experience and tenure at your position, you become the person to supervise teams of young mechanical engineers while they work on their projects Must also determine the environmental impact that the project may have Manage and fix any problems that might occur during development, manufacturing, testing and production They must follow the project through every step to make sure everything is done safely and correctly Must also estimate time and cost of the project Report how the project is going to their superior

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING AT WSU Advising and Career Services Many opportunities that are available for ME students such as Student Organizations and Internships There is over 50 internships in the local area available for ME students at WSU. Student Organizations Fromula SAE – Build small formula-style racing cars, test, race and compete in the Formula Series with other universities participating from all over the world. Team Ethanol – Ethanol in place of gas powered vehicles.

TODAY’S TECHNOLOGY General Motors has used an idea similar to how our optical sensors will read the line on the floor and adjust the direction of our robot accordingly. Magnetic Ride Control This incoming information is relayed to a computer which then instructs the shocks in the vehicle to react. A magnetic charge is sent through the shock fluid which contains metal particles suspended inside.
13
MATERIALS Other drivers are the discovery of new materials, which Mechanical Engineers employ in their designs for increased performance. Ford has been leading the way with experiments in lightweight materials. In designing their new f-series pickups, the entire cab was redesigned to be composed of aluminum as opposed to traditional steel. Ford to save hundreds of pounds and thus increase the overall efficiency of the vehicle, as seen by an increase in gas mileage. Lightweight materials have helped this production vehicle to compete on racetracks with some of the best of today’s supercars.
