The Importance of Material Handling Material handling is the transportation, storage and protection of materials in production, distribution, consumption and disposal. In many cases, transpoertation is dominant. The cost of material handling is 5 to 90 percent of the total cost

Example An American company produced small items. The production uses labor on high level. The production was transferred to the Carribian area. The company now imports, and stores the products. It packs, and labels the products for the orders of the shops of large department store chains. Material handling cost is close to 90 percent.
