Interaction Design IxD

An Overview The field : Terms, influences, organizations, jobs. More on defining Interaction Design (IxD)? Principles Design activity

The field : Terms, organizations, jobs.

Terms Number of terms used emphasizing what is being designed, e.g.,  user interface design  software design  user-centered design  product design  usability,  information architecture,  human factors  web design,  User experience design (UX) IxD is umbrella term covering all these aspects  fundamental to all disciplines, fields, and approaches concerned with researching and designing systems or products for people

IxD is umbrella term

Relationship between IxD, HCI and other fields Academic disciplines contributing to IxD:  Psychology  Social Sciences  Computing Sciences  Engineering  Ergonomics  Information architecture  Human factors engineering

Relationship between IxD, HCI and other fields Design practices contributing to IxD:  Graphic design  Product design  Artist-design  Industrial design  Film industry

Relationship between IxD, HCI and other fields Interdisciplinary fields that ‘do’ IxD:  HCI  Human Factors  Cognitive Engineering  Cognitive Ergonomics  Computer Supported Co-operative Work  Information Systems  It is everywhere

More on defining Interaction Design (IxD)?

Interaction Design Video What is interaction Design? Mouse & Desktop:  Doug Engelbart  Tim Mott  Larry Tesler My PC  Bill Atkinson

Defining the field Two main views of IxD, coming out of different intellectual viewpoints but converging in practice. 1. IxD as design discipline, focused on digitally design materials. 2. IxD as an extension of HCI, a field originating in experimental psychology and computer science. Source: http://interaction-design.org/encyclopedia/interaction_design.html

IxD as a Design Discipline Focus "shaping interactive products & services" as design work. Shares the following characteristic:  Intends to improve situations by developing some sort of product or service.  Considers technical, aesthetic and ethical qualities in design.  Involves developing an understanding of the task – the "problem".  Entails thinking by sketching, building models, and expressing potential ideas in other tangible forms.

IxD: As an Extension of HCI Main concern in HCI is:  to assert instrumental qualities such as usability and usefulness of digital products and services.  aimed at work-related or task-oriented use situations.  typically focused on individual user and his/her goals.

IxD: As an Extension of HCI Influential proponents Ben Shneiderman, Donald Norman, Stuart Card and Jenny Preece.Ben Shneiderman Donald NormanStuart CardJenny Preece

IxD: As an Extension of HCI …a discipline concerned with the design, evaluation and implementation of interactive computing systems for human use and with major phenomena surrounding them.  As defined by the Special Interest Group on Human-Computer Interaction (SIGCHI) of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)Special Interest Group on Human-Computer Interaction Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)

IxD: As an Extension of HCI Rough characterization of HCI as a field. It examines: 1. joint performance of tasks by humans and machines; 2. structure of communication between human and machine; 3. human capabilities to use machines (including learnability of interfaces); 4. algorithms and programming of the interface itself; 5. engineering concerns that arise in designing and building interfaces; 6. process of specification, design, and implementation and evaluation of interfaces; and design trade-offs. HCI has science, engineering, and design aspects.

IxD: As an Extension of HCI

IxD as a Design Discipline Dan Saffer, Designing for Interaction, 2010. Interaction design perspectives:  Technology-centered view  Behaviorist view  Social Interaction Design view

IxD as a Design Discipline Technology-centered view IxDers make technology useful, usable, and pleasurable to use. IxDers take stuff produced by engineers and programmers and make it enjoyable for people to use.

IxD as a Design Discipline Behaviorist view IxD is about defining the behavior of artifacts, environments, and systems. Focuses on functionality and feedback:  product behavior  how they provide feedback to people.

IxD as a Design Discipline Social Interaction Design view Broadest view of IxD IxD revolves around facilitating communication between humans through products.

IxD as a Design Discipline Social Interaction Design view Any object or device can make a connection between people. Takes many forms;  one-to-one as with a telephone,  one-to-many as with a blog, or  many-to-many as with the stock market.
