Criteria for a Profession A profession utilizes a well-defined and well- organized body of specialized knowledge Constantly enlarges the body of knowledge it uses by using the scientific method Entrusts the education of its practitioners to institutions of higher education Applies its body of knowledge in practice services vital to human & social welfare

Criteria for a Profession Cont. Functions autonomously in the formulation of professional policy & in the control of professional activity Attracts individuals of intellectual & personal qualities who exalt service above personal gain & who recognize their chosen occupation as a life work Strives to compensate its practitioners by providing freedom of action, opportunity for continuous professional growth, & economic security.
