1 Single Digit Whole Number Addition FlashCards

2 The Whole Numbers are the natural numbers (1, 2, 3, …), and the number zero (0).

3 When we add zero (0) to any number, the result (sum) is the number that zero was added to, regardless as to whether zero was added to the original number before it, or after it. The rule reads: 0 + a = a or a + 0 = a So = 9 and = 4

4 When we add two numbers, the order doesn’t matter; that is, the sum (result) is the same.
The rule (of Commutivity for Addition) states: a + b = b + a Just as = 8, it is also true that = 8 .

5 You may have remembered being asked to memorize whole number addition facts in grade school.
The next slide is a table of sums of whole numbers 0 through 9

7 To use this table, simply take any number
in the top row and any number in the first column, and their sum can be found where that row and column intersect. Notice that the sum : = 12 can be found by using the above mentioned process with the table… see next slide…
