Meaning: 1) name: univ. of proper names 2) the name is used for everything which the name covers, everything the thought or feeling of which is aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing, remembering, the name, i.e. for one's rank, authority, interests, pleasure, command, excellences, deeds etc. 3) persons reckoned up by name 4) the cause or reason named: on this account, because he suffers as a Christian, for this reason

3. The New Testament Pattern
N. T. passages on MUSIC used in the worship of God in the church:
James 5:13, “Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.”
Acts 16:25, “And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.
Romans 15:9, “And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name.”

1 Corinthians 14:15, “What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.”
Ephesians 5:19, “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;”
Colossians 3:16, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”

Heb. 2:12, “Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee.”
Hebrews 13:15, “By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.”

“I don’t see anything wrong with it”
What can we see that is right about it?
1 Cor. 2:12-14 – God hasn’t asked our opinion
Isa. 55:8-9 – Our thoughts are often foolish
Prov. 14:12 – “There is a way that seemeth right”
Jer. 10:23 – We are not capable to advise
“God doesn’t say NOT TO”
We do not serve God by what He does not say!

We are to “walk by faith and NOT by sight,” 2Cor. 5:7

If Instrumental in worship cannot be found in the New Testament, it is NOT OF FAITH.
“There are harps in heaven”
Rev. is Symbolical. If “harps” is literal, so is the 144,000 male, Jewish, Virgins that are going to heaven. Rev. 7:4; 21:17

John said he heard a “VOICE” (Rev. 14:2), “AS” rushing water, thunders, harps.
If “harps” can be literalized to justify inst. of music in worship, why not literalize the other symbols and use them in worship? “golden censor,” “incense,” “golden altar” – 5:8
“We use it in the home,” why not worship?
“It is just an aid” – An aid would be a song book, tuning device, leader, all of which aids the thing specified--singing

11. “The word ‘psalm’ in Eph. 5:19, includes it”
If this were true we would be required to use it.
If true, all would have to play and sing
Why wasn’t Paul inspired to say “play and sing?”
Why wasn’t it obeyed until 600 years later?
The word “psallo” does not include the inst.
“psallo” – In the N. T. to sing a hymn, to celebrate the praises of God in song, James 5:13 (Thayer)
