STUDENT RIGHTS Students with disabilities at VGCC have the right to: 6 equal access to courses, programs, services, jobs and activities offered by the college; equal opportunity to work, learn and receive accommodations, academic adjustments and/or auxiliary aids and services; confidentiality of information regarding their disability as applicable laws allow; information made available in accessible formats VGCC Disability Services 2014

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES Students with disabilities at VGCC have the responsibility to: 7 meet College’s qualifications, maintain essential instructional standards for programs, courses, services, and activities; self-identify disability status in a reasonable and timely manner; provide disability documentation from a qualified professional reflecting student’s current disability status, and how the disability limits participation in courses, programs, services, and activities; follow published procedures for obtaining academic adjustments or auxiliary aids and services VGCC Disability Services 2014

VANCE-GRANVILE COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISABILITY SERVICES Vance-Granville Community College has the responsibility to: 9 accommodate the known limitations of an individual or otherwise qualified student with a disability; ensure that courses, programs, services, and activities, when viewed in their entirety, are available and usable in the most integrated and appropriate settings, provide or arrange accommodations, academic adjustments, and/or auxiliary aids and services for students with disabilities in courses, programs, services, and activities; maintain appropriate confidentiality of records and communication, except where permitted or required by law; maintain academic standards by providing accommodations without compromising the content, quality, or level of instruction. STUDENT ACCOMMODATION PROCESS Take college’s placement test to determine English and Math course placement Contact Disability Services Counselor at (252) 738-3350 to arrange accommodations prior to testing if needed Meet with academic advisor to register for classes Complete accommodation request form Submit appropriate documentation regarding medical conditions or disability to Disability Services 14 days prior to beginning of semester Schedule appointment with Disability Services Counselor to discuss services or accommodations. DISABILITY SERVICES DOCUMENTATION GUIDELINES 1) Documentation must be comprehensive and include clear diagnostic statement 2) Documentation must be current (within last three to five years) and should reflect student’s present needs and level of functioning 3) Professionals conducting assessments and rendering diagnoses of disabilities must be qualified to do so 13 VGCC Disability Services 2014

ACCOMMODATIONS GRANTED Accommodations based upon: Documentation, recommendations, and interview with student. Disability Services Counselor determines eligibility for services and develops accommodation form which outlines the approved accommodations and/or services a student will receive for that semester Student options to opt-out: Student(s) may choose not to use approved accommodations in all classes. In that case, accommodation form will be prepared for specific classes requested by student. Once accommodation form created, student responsible for obtaining instructors’ signatures and returning signed accommodation form to Disability Services within the first week of classes Accommodations effective in each class when student has: Signed and dated accommodation form Returned documents to Disability Services. Disability Services does not provide accommodations retroactively. 14 VGCC Disability Services 2014

TEMPORARY CONDITIONS & PROVISIONAL ACCOMMODATIONS TEMPORARY CONDITIONS: Temporary medical conditions/disabilities that may require accommodations for limited time (ex: a broken hand) Each case considered individually PROVISIONAL ACCOMMODATIONS: Provisional accommodations provided for students for specific number of working days or one semester Receipt of official and complete documentation of student’s medical condition or disability required All cases handled individually and at discretion of Disability Services Counselor If approved, will be for up to one semester only pending further appropriate documentation 15 VGCC Disability Services 2014
