Sopwith f-1 camel On December 22, 1916 the Sopwith Experimental Department passed a prototype aircraft powered by the 110 hp Clerget 9Z engine which had been designed by Herbert Smith and modified by Fred S. Sigrist.

Halberstadt Cl IV The engine was mounted to the extreme forward of the fuselage just in front of the pilot and was of a 160 horsepower Mercedes D.III 6-cylinder, in-line, water-cooled engine type operating a two-blade propeller.

Spad XIII In early 1915, noted automobile engineer Marc Birkigt adapted his famed Hispano-Suiza engine for use in aircraft. The result was a powerful, inline, 140- horsepower engine which weighed approximately 330 pounds.
