I agree to follow all of these policies, professional dispositions, and procedures as stated. Name and Date: Alison Freeman, November 24, 2014

Intended Grade Level: Middle School Grades 6-8

I wanted to make a video about people who have paved the way for diversity in our world. They are all “heroes”. I want students to honor their courage and strength by passing the spirit of diversity on to the next generation. They are “heroes” too!!!

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines diversity as: the quality or state of having many different forms, types, ideas, etc.

The state of having people who are different races or who have different cultures in a group or organization.

Here are some people who uphold those values……

The Freedom Riders were a group of average American college students who left school and risked their lives…

so their racially diverse friends could sit next to them on the bus.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was a minister who spent his life advocating for civil rights…….

so that his children could play freely with other children.

live in a world without prejudice and hate.

“A teacher sent the following note home with a six-year-old boy: “He is too stupid to learn.” That boy was Thomas A. Edison”. - Thomas Edison

It’s a good thing he didn’t listen to the teacher or we would all still be in the dark.

Edison was actually hearing impaired and dyslexic…. but he didn’t let that stop him from becoming a great inventor.

Who says only men can be pilots or serve their country in the military…

These women didn’t let their gender stand in the way of their dreams.

"Great things can happen when you have the courage to be yourself," -NFL Player Michael Sam

Sam says it shouldn’t matter whether or not he is openly gay. He just wants to play football.

These heroes all turned their “pain into power.”

The power to be diverse.

Now it’s your turn…

Be friends with anyone you want.

Do anything you can dream of.

Even when the road may be a little rough.

Be you….. Be diverse…..

You are a hero!!!!!!!
